Vijayapura, Feb 9: In a late night operation on Sunday, excise police intercepted a container truck used to transport two-wheelers, and found 16.5 kg of opium worth six lac rupees hidden inside the container. They arrested the driver of the container, Kishen Singh Badan Singh Yadav, who hails from Haryana. The opium was packed in 33 sealed plastic sachets of 500 grams each.

The excise police were tipped by sources that the container, moving to Madurai from Gurgaon near New Delhi, was smuggling opium. Excise police inspector, A A Mujavar, deputy superintendent of police, Jagadish Inamdar, and their team waited for the container at Halasangi Cross in Indi taluk. When the container arrived, it was stopped, and a check revealed that opium sachets were hidden between motor bikes.

It is gathered that the opium, brought from Madhya Pradesh, was meant for delivery to certain dens located on the route between Vijayapura and Tumakuru. The driver revealed during the questioning that opium was given to these dens as per the local demand. Circle police inspector, A A Mujavar, said that more details are being put together.

A case stands filed in Vijayapura excise police station, and the container along with 52 motor bikes, has been impounded. Excise police say that a widespread network of drugs dealers is functioning in the state with Vijayapura as its hub, and containers which pass through a number of district after entering the state via Sollapur, are used conveniently for drugs trafficking.
