Euro 2016 win would be extraordinary for Spain: Casillas

Madrid, March 1 (IANS): Spain national team goalkeeper Iker Casillas is dreaming of winning a third consecutive European Championship title this year, claiming it would be an "extraordinary" achievement.

Spain are the only nation to successfully defend the tournament since its inception in 1960, having lifted the trophy in 2008 and 2012.

The FC Porto goalkeeper will contend with Manchester United's David de Gea for the No.1 jersey at next summer's competition and remained hopeful of his country's chances of success.

"It would be extraordinary to lift a third trophy. It is difficult but not impossible," Casillas was quoted as saying by goal.com on Monday.

Casillas, 34, believes hosts France are well equipped to end the tournament as victors but remained wary of the talents of other top nations.

"France I like. You have to respect Italy. Germany are world champions! Croatia can be a surprise," the former Real Madrid goalkeeper said.
