Udupi, Oct 22: As part of ‘Maha Navratri Festival’, Vijayadasami was celebrated with great traditional gaiety, pomp and devotion  at Shri Mookambika temple at Kollur near here on Sunday October 21.

The Vijayadasami celebration began with the ceremony of Vidyarambha at Saraswati Mandira. At this ceremony thousands of children, infact, around 3,600 took part in the celebration.

‘Vidyarambha’ indicates the start of the education process of a child. During the ceremony the symbol of ‘Om’ was written on the tongue of children aged between two to three years with a turmeric twig.

According to ancient Hindu scriptures Saraswati Mandira is the place where the much revered and learned Hindu scholar and saint Shankaracharya, the exponent of Adwaita philosophy composed the ‘Saundarya Lahari’.

The procession of the idol of Mookambika was taken to the ‘Shukla Tirtha’, about 1.5 km from Kollur and was then brought back. This event is called as ‘Vijaya Utsava’.
