Udupi: ‘NPCL Should Use Sea Water for Construction Purposes’

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (KD/SM)

Udupi, Oct 23: Groundwater should not be used for the construction of mega projects like Nagarjuna Power Project at Yellur, said Vijaykumar Hegde, president, executive committee, Nagarjuna Virodhi Horata Samithi here on Monday October 22.

He further said that Nararjuna Power Corporation Limited (NPCL) should use sea water by desalinating it for the construction purpose. If the NPCL uses the groundwater, people living in nearby areas will face shortage of water during summer season, he informed.

Hegde said that before giving any permission to the mega projects, the government should initiate a study on the carrying capacity of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada district. A study should be made on each and every project that are coming to city as the attempts were on to conduct a survey for the construction of a port at Padubidri although it was being portrayed as a survey for various other purposes.

He urged the samiti to distribute 25 lac pamphlets among the people for the awareness of the mega project and its affects. Awareness campaigns, in order make people aware of the facts about the thermal power project at Yellur, will be conducted in Nanikur, Yellur, Palimar, Padubidri, Mudrangady and Hejmady villages. A delegation committee will meet the governor Rameshwar Thakur and explain the facts about the projects to him soon, Hegde added.

Christian Koota, young wing of Jamaat E Islami Hind, Spoorthi Dhama and leaders of Bharatiya Krishak Sangha were present at the press meet.
