Four undertrials flee from Raichur jail, manhunt on

BENGALURU, Jul 23 (Agencies) : In a daring midnight escape, four undertrial prisoners escaped from the Devadurga sub jail in Raichur district in the wee hours of Friday. According to police, Ramesh, Devaraj, Hanumantha and Rangappa escaped from the sub jail some time between 11pm on Thursday and 5.30 am on Friday.

The police said that the accused had broken the toilet window open and escaped. Ramesh had been arrested for a motor vehicle theft while the other three had been arrested on charges of house theft.

There were five persons lodged in the cell. The cell-mate who didn’t escape had been arrested on rape charges. The prison-break came to light when the accused were not seen during the morning Shramadhaan work at the jail. The jail warden alerted the local police.

A massive hunt has been launched. Additional SP of Raichur S B Patil said, “We have formed three teams and have passed information to counterparts in neighbouring districts and states as well.”

The negligent Jail staff should be put behind bars, until the escaped undertrials are caught.

Later on, the negligent Jail staff may be duly investigated and punished in such a way that, there will be no such jailbreaks in future. There should be 'zero-tolerance' towards negligence in duty.
