Udupi: Manipal University to Confer Doctorate on Ajit S Shetty

Udupi, Feb 22: Manipal University is conferring its honourary doctorate on Dr Ajit S Shetty, Chairman and Managing Director of Janssen Pharmaceutica N V Beerse, Belgium, at a special convocation ceremony organised on February 24 at 6 pm at Valley View International here.

The Chancellor of Manipal University Dr Ramdas M Pai will present the honorary Doctorate while Pro-Chancellor Dr H S Ballal, Vice-Chancellor Dr Raj P Warrier and Registrar Dr H Vinod Bhat will present.

Janssen Pharmaceutica N V is a multinational pharmaceutical research and production company belongs to Johnson and Johnson. Dr Shetty also serves as the president of Global Chemical and Pharmaceutical Operations for Johnson and Johnson of New Brunswick, New Jersey.

A native of Bangalore, he had his schooling at Madras Christian College School and graduated from Loyola College in Chennai. He had completed his BA in Natural Sciences and PhD in Metallurgy from Trinity College of the Cambridge University, UK.

He got his MSIA (MBA) from Carnegie Mellon University in 1976. Dr Shetty joined Janssen Pharmaceutica, Belgium’s largest pharmaceutical company in 1976. He is married to Christine Clerinx, a niece of the founder, the late Dr Paul Janssen and lives with his family in Vosselaar.
