Hassan: Water pumping from Yettinahole to begin by December

Daijiworld Media Network - Hassan (SP)

Hassan, Apr 12: A sum of Rs 1,800 crore has already been spend for the Yettinahole project being executed at a cost of Rs 12,900 crore for transporting water from Malnad region to parched districts in the plains.

Karnataka Legislature Assurances Committee expressed the hope in the state assembly on Tuesday April 11 that the work of lifting water through pump houses might begin by the end of December.

The committee chaired by K N Rajanna, with MLAs, Laxman Savadi, Chikkamadu, S T Somashekhar, and H K Kumaraswamy as its members, visited Kumbaradi coffee estate in Kesaganahalli village in Sakleshpur taluk, Maranahalli Kadumane Estate, and Hebbasale where Yettinahole project works are on. The committee also checked the pump house works undertaken in Doddanagara village in the taluk and other works at Hebbanahalli village on Tuesday April 11.

Addressing a meeting convened in a private hotel in the town before the committee went for spot inspection, Rajanna stated that 70 percent of the first phase of Yettinahole project works have been completed and engineers have given the opinion that water can be pumped from check dams by December end.

"As per the study conducted by experts from the state and centre, water flowing through streams, rivulets, rivers, etc in Malnad area have been calculated and it is estimated that 24 tmc water would be available from this project. If this water is used to fill lakes and ponds in the plains for drinking purpose, it is hoped that the situation there will improve, he stated.

Large parts of our district do not have water to drink. We still have about two months for the monsoon to start and what are we going to drink till then? It all started last year and this will only worsen over a period of time. When we ourselves do not have water to drink, how on earth are we to allow this Yettinahole project to go ahead? I have run out of words to condemn the havoc wreaked by the politicians. Not that it matters to these thick skinned rogues. All of them cutting across party lines have looted our district. The people of this district who matter and who are expected to take up the cudgels for us are supporting this project. When our own people are not with us, what the hell can we do? I can only say that the curse of the people from this district will fall on those who have stabbed us in our backs. They will pay for their sins. I don't know what answer they will give when God questions them. Let them not lose sight of the fact that they will have to leave this world empty handed. They will not be able to carry with them the ill gotten wealth and commission they would have received for keeping their dirty mouths shut. To hell with such politicians who come to us begging for votes.

Can the duly signed documents with calculations proving that 24tmc of water will be achieved/available please be made public. Will our ministers and government authorities counter sign these documents under conditions that if anything less than 20tmc is obtained, their personal and family assets may be seized along with them being subjected to appropriate prison terms

clear evidence for Siddu and his team's arrogance and also shame mark for our local MLAs and MPs. Really shame. An arrogant government could succeed to implement a project , clearly by force, in spite of whole district was opposing, Green committees clearly scrapping the project, holding the project many times , many committees recommending govt to stop and scrap this project.... in spite of all these... an arrogant govt could continue the project, show the expense of 1,800 crore already.... wow.... Nothing can help us and the district now... we already lost Nethravathi to Siddu and his team.

Entire Karnataka should be linked by simple kalwes and ponds /lakes/mini dams. This the best way to manage since rainfall is very unpredictable and some regions recieve heavy rains so flooding can be avoided as well as distribution done evenly . Believe me this is no rocket science water naturally flows from one area to other ots just that we need to channelise it

This is by far the worst solution the govt. has come up to divert the water from its natural course.
Mangalore and shortly all the regions around will face drought. I hope Mangaloreans will be more sensible to saving water and come up with ecological solutions to solve the calamity that will inevitable.
