Beltangady, May 6: The repair work on NH 48 on Shiradi Ghat section from Gundya to Sakleshpur is almost over and the stretch will be opened for traffic from June 1 onwards.

Addressing press persons here on Monday May 5, public works, ports and inland water transport department principal secretary Sudhir Krishna said that though the deadline for the repair works is March 15, 2009, the work is almost over and vehicles will be allowed to ply on the stretch.

The movement of heavy vehicles was banned for carrying out repair works on the section since December 2007. This caused a great inconvenience to people as they had to take a detour through Charmadi Ghat which increased the travelling time by four to five hours.

Krishna further informed that the remaining work pertained to concreting the curves and repairing drainage. Both works are scheduled to be completed by May end and the stretch will be opened on June 1, he said.

Of the 13 curves, eight have been completed while the rest will be done soon. About 250 metres of concreting work is pending. The repair work is being done at a cost of Rs 33 crore.

The asphalation of the road was done using bituminous macadam and bituminous concrete. The work includes repair of carriageway, asphalation, culvert construction, concreting and drainage repair.

I travelled the Shiradi Ghat in Jan and the wheel came off my car around 6pm 12 kms through from Sakleshpur. Luckily nothing happened to any of us as we were clocking only 15kmph. It took me another 6 hours to get a techie and get moving. Thank God we have new road, apparently looking at other messages that came in the road is getting damaged fast due to ore laden trucks plying those roads.

It will be a good news to all the travellers on this strech. We should congragulate all politicians who were out of power during this period for not interfering in the work. This show how our National highway and other authorities can work without their political bosses. The governor's rule has really saved us from possibly a bad road work and the corruption.let us hope the work gets finished before the new government forms in Karnataka

Finally, it will be a smooth ride between Mangalore and Bangalore. Given the bad state of roads in the past, i had to keep extra day only for travel as everytime, i reached Bangalore only by 10. However with the new roads, i will be able to travel more often

I drove last week, and June 1 deadline seems feasible. For now, the road looks great [wherever, repair is done]. We will have to wait till the monsoon to qualify this road!!

Vishwa, you are right. However, if we do a permanent fix we will not have roadwork. We are 'dig a hole to fill a hole culture.' How can we change!

Last time also i have pointed out that, they are not using steel in RCC road. in the above picture you can see concreat is beeing put without steel in it. without steel concreat becomes brittle and becomes peaceses in later days. But the road work has come out well( I saw some 15 days back)

Great News. Hope work finishes by June. It is really a tough job , considering the problems contractors had to face. Anyways, frequent travellers on that route will be relieved now.

If it is true, then a GREAT News. It is unfortunate to see a KSRTC bus plying in the route despite ban on heavy vehicles.
