Mangalore, May 7: The students of P A Engineering College located in the outskirts of the city staged protest against the college administration demanding better management of college buses on Wednesday May 7.

As reported earlier in these columns, a bus belonging to this college overturned just about 200 meters away from the college on Tuesday May 7, while carrying students to the college from the city. Though there was no official confirmation, sources claimed that more than 25 students had sustained injuries in the accident. The eyewitnesses had stated that bus had toppled thrice before turning turtle. The mishap is said to have occurred owing to brake failure. Therefore, the students staged protest against the college management and demanded better maintenance of the buses.

The students also demanded the management to form students’ council in the college and withdraw old buses from service. The students alleged that, when accidents occur, the families of the students are at the receiving end and not the college management. ‘Therefore the management should take this mishap seriously,’ they demanded.

The driver of the bus had earlier informed the college authorities when the tyre got punctured at Yekkur. But the authorities neglected the words of the driver and told him to drive the bus to the college within the stipulated time or else be prepared to lose the job. Having no other way out, driver had continued driving, students blamed.

Reports reaching Daijiworld office from the spot said that students started the protest again in the afternoon when the management disagreed to meet their demands. The students have made it very clear that they will not withdraw their protest, till the management agrees with them.

The concerned authority who neglected a security warning from the driver instead of taking action threatens the poor driver's job jeopardising the lives of several students. This dangerous man has no right to continue in his job.

This is the second incident of brake failure of bus in the city. In the first incident two students have lost their precious lives. What the RTO authorities are doing? Whether they have regular inspection of private buses or they take things for granted. Thank God no casualties this time. RTO please open your eyes and take action.

Frankly, it seems a bit amusing to see people complain about food and hold it against the management. I've been to many places but am yet to meet any student who speaks well about the food served in his/her hostel (and this is applicable all over the world). We too have stayed in hostels (in a different college though), and most of the time in the hostel was spent complaining about the terrible food!

Yes, safety is a serious matter and can't be taken lightly. As students, we don't join engineering colleges to enjoy the food, do we. Moreover, we've all gone on minor protests at our colleges at some point in time or the other, but looks like nowadays, the students are savvy enough to call the media and get it splashed all over. I don't know whether this is a good or bad trend.

Why parents are sending good schools/colleges because our children can study / stay happily. When driver informed about the faults, why management has not taken proper action?. According to me the school / college management should provide 1st class treatment to their students. Not only students, we all should protest against the concerned people.

The accident was a very unfortunate incident......but reading the comments of some of the readers it seems that their concern is more towards maligning the college than the welfare of the students. Being an engineering student myself I would like to inform those readers who are expressing their opinions on heresay, that the facilities offered by P.A. college is amongst the best in the city. The buses are also better than those being used by other colleges. The lecturers are helpful and caring, infact one of the most common complaints by the students against the college is that they feel they are still in school rather than college because of the strict levels of discipline being imposed by the management!!

I would like to request the striking students to behave more responsibly and sort the matter out with the management first instead of going on a strike without even presenting their demands to the management. I would also request the management to look into the matter. All this is tarnishing the image of the college and students.

I agree with Preethi's comments on hostel food. But just to let others know that the majority hostilities are from our neighboring state, and many a times food is prepared on their taste. There are some examples which are not good to mention here. The food should be prepared with interest of both locals and others. One can not make someone to eat for years the same food which you haven't eaten from your childhood. This leads some of the students avoiding mess even after they pay for it.

This incidence should be an eye opener for all those education institutions mushrooming in and around Mangalore, run mainly by bussiness men, who are least interested in the welfare of our society!!

The accident was just waiting to happen. I've heard this is not the first incident to involve failure of the brakes of the bus. The college management seems to take pride in treating the students like cattle instead of young adults studying to be professionals. The students shouldn't stop the strike till the management meets their demands - Is the management so unprofessional to refuse the students better bus facilities even after such an accident?

I would like to inform all readers that the mess of P.A. College is run by the students mess committee from the past one year, all the decisions regarding menu etc are taken by the students themselves. All students staying inside the campus are aware of this fact. Anyone in doubts regarding this just has to take a look at the mess during mess hours to see who is going empty stomach to classes, I see this just as an attempt to malign the good name of the college. The issue of the accident is just being used as a weapon to serve vested interests.

i agree with the comments given by the others above regarding the negligence of the authorities, but i also disagree with the fact about the hostel facilities and mess food because i myself have stayed in the hostel and believe that there is no lack of facilities or amenities. Staying in the hostel depends on whether you can adjust to the hostel atmosphere. There might have been a day or 2 in between that the food has not been good. I asked my juniors presently studying in the college about the food and they told me the food is much better than when we left. But i must say that the students lack a voice in the college.

Every action and decision is taken by the management. The lecturers have been given supreme authority in the college. I would like to see the students have a right of speech using which they can put forth their demands using convenient methods other tha the last alternative resorting to striking. This tarnishes the reputation of the college as well as the students.I would also like to see the students have as much rights as the staff. This can lead to a better college atmosphere.

It will be an eye opener for all those parents who wish to have a seat for their wards in such ill-managed colleges. Can we have some more information about other colleges in and around Mangaluru? Such information will help parents to choose the right ones.

It’s indeed an example for the negligence of the management. I know some of my friends studying there and they express many other problems like mess, hostel facilities, no proper teaching staff, lack of knowledge in teachers etc. Especially the hostel food is so bad the students eat in a miserable condition. The management has to take this seriously and solve these issues.

It’s a shame to the management to behave so silly with the students. Don't forget these students are loving children of their parents. They are concerned of them. Even after the driver informed about the faults, why the management did not took necessary actions? It’s by God’s mercy that there are no serious injuries. But the concerned authorities should be arrested on criminal case.

I have my relative’s studying in this college. Even the hostel food is so bad students are going for classes in empty stomach. They informed the authorities but the answer they got “Human has taste buds only in front of the tongue. So just swallow it”. Everyone knows the saying healthy mind in a healthy body. If the management is so careless about student concern, it should be punished. I kindly request the media to highlight all the issues the students are facing in this college. We can help for the younger generation at least by these things.
