Udupi, Aug 8: Students of Mahatma Gandhi model higher primary school, Udupi, held a silent protest on Monday, August 7 led by social worker Nityananda Olakadu demanding the re-opening of school with better facilities instead of shutting it down.

The government school is almost on the verge of collapsing. It is adjacent to a road with high traffic density. The school has no basic infrastructure. Seeing the condition of the school, the officials of the Education Department, Udupi, had shifted the students from the 131-year-old school to the North School and Indiranagar School.

“This school has notable alumni like including Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Pejawar Math, Manorama Madhwaraj, U R Rao and few others. Children of migratory workers study in this school. Students here are demanding the order of shifting them to North School and Indiranagar School to be revoked. They do not want to go to other school. The wall of the school collapsed three week ago. The concerned department is not showing any interest to save this historical school,” said Nityananda Olakadu.

“The authority should withdraw the order which was passed earlier and re-open the school. Otherwise the students will hold hunger strike in the coming days,” added Olakadu on behalf of the students.

I think Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Pejawar Math should step in and save the school.

Student scarcity might be quoted as a reason for closure of school. Who will send their kids to this school if it is in such a situation and there are no proper teachers?

May be eye on the prime land is the reason for not repairing and developing the school.
