Mangaluru: Somanatha temple to get brand new 41 ft chariot

Mangaluru, Sep 1: Historically famous Lord Somanatha temple at Someshwara near Kotekar here will soon get a new chariot (Brahmaratha). N Muttappa Rai and advocate, B Raveendra Rai, have come forward to provide the chariot by meeting its cost. This information was given by president of temple managing committee, Vishwanath Gatti Vogga.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday August 31, Vishwanath Shetty said that a function will be held at the temple at 10.30 am on September 3 to entrust the work of building the chariot through customary presentation of 'Veelya' signifying official handing over of work. He said that the current chariot, which was being pulled in the presence of Queen Abbakka, has become dilapidated.

"The 'Veelya' will be presented to well-known Brahmanaratha sculptor, Laxminarayana Acharya, a national award winner, in the presene of Muttappa Rai and Raveendra Rai. This function will be attended by Nileshwar Padmanabha Tantry, minister, U T Khader, MP, Nalin Kumar Kateel etc.

The proposed chariot will be 41 feet tall with base of 10.5 feet, six feet Mantap, and two oval shaped 'Goodu' with total height of 21.5 feet and the top 'Kalasha' which will be three feet in height.

The press conference was attended by member of the committee, Raghava R Uchil, Rukkayya Bangera, and Sudhakar Bhandary.
