Mangalore, Jun 30: Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner (DC) M Maheshwar Rao exhorted the students to plant at least five saplings near their homes or schools or any other convenient places each year and care for them till they are able to sustain on their own. There is an urgent need for every one to engage in active afforestation activities, he explained.

He was speaking after giving away certificates to meritorious scouts, guides, bul buls and clubs from various schools, at his home office in the city on Sunday June 29.

Rao said that the newly-set up Scouts Bhavan in Pilikula will start functioning from this year itself. The administration will make all out efforts to see that scouts and guides units are made operational in all the government schools in the district, said Rao, who also happens to be the district president of Bharat Scouts and Guides. "We will, in association with the health department, ensure that all the students interested in scouts and guides activities are provided an opportunity," he asserted.

Various meritorious scouts and guides received their certificates from the DC. Bharat Scouts and Guides district chief commissioner I A Kairanna, commmissioner for scouts N G Mohan, commissioner for guides Irene D'Cunha, patrons Dr T R Shetty and Prajna Maheshwar Rao were present.

A spendid idea indeed, sir.Plant saplings. However,I must add that we had an incident but a few months ago in our area where on PRIVATE LAND and with the authority of the landowner- we as a group planted a NEEM sapling, bouganvilla hedging and a MANGIUM tree and set up a bench for the villagers who trudge up a hill to rest under the shade to catch their breath.

To protect the place, we built a two/three laterite stone barrier, levelled the land and grassed the area too- just a little over ONE CENT of land. Lo and behold, the MCC authorities claimed that a structure was built without authority (seen by the then Mayor the then Mumnicipal Councillor as well as the press who appreciaited what had been done and confirmed it was not a structure) but with the help of the owner, a stay was obtained from the Court against any demolition by MCC.

So what did they do they got MUDA to come and demolish the litlle green patch that was built by neighbourhood contributions and looked after with loving care for over six months. They had Poclains brought there why they had 20/25 policemen in two vehicles there and two petty officials of MUDA came in the Commissioner's car at 6.30 in the morning to carry out the demolition.

So much for greening our city when we have scroundrels sitting in petty places in the MCC/MUDA. Sir, if you want the city greened, which is the need of the hour,we will be pleased to assist but not at the cost of losing our 10,000 Rs because some junior officer in MUDA is related to someone who does not want to see trees close to his boundary or to have beautification done.

I am prepared to show you this place should you get back to me by email or thru Daijiworld. And am personally prepared to reinstate it at my cost but need an assurance it will not be demolished again by MUDA ( who incidentally do not have authority per law to carry out demolition in private property). As a Boy Scout in my youth, Sir, we used to water the saplings planted at the edge of the footpaths.
