Mangalore: Release of Captured Seaman Jeevan Still Elusive

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Sep 13: It is learnt that the information given by the contractor of the Iranian ship that was captured by Somalian pirates, to the family of Jeevan Kiran D'Souza from Chevar Kondkakkad near here, that the youth along with other 23 staff of the ship were scheduled for early release, was false.

Wilson D'Souza, elder brother of Jeevan, has been doing everything possible to secure early release of his 28-year-old brother. He has been contacting the ship contractors frequently to learn about latest position. The contractors had earlier informed him that an agreement had been entered into with the pirates under which the ship and the seamen were to be released subject to meeting 80% of the conditions put forth by the pirates. After Wilson took the contractors to task about the non-release of his brother even after a week since giving the above assurance, contractors are learnt to have admitted, that they had given the assurance to pacify the worried family.

It is gathered, that Wilson has not been able to contact his brother over phone since about a week. Last time when he spoke, Jeevan is understood to have explained to his elder brother that they are under constant vigil, food is scarce and that there was shortage of fresh water.

The family feels that the ship contractors have not taken keen interest for securing the release of the employed trapped in the ship, as they would be made to shell-out huge amount of money. On the other hand, if they lose the ship, they will get insurance amount. Vigorous diplomatic efforts from the union government are necessary to secure the early release of the ship staff, it is being felt now.
