Muchova stuns Muguruza, qualifies for US Open 3rd round

New York, Aug 30 (IANS): Czech Republic's Karolina Muchova has eliminated Spain's Garbine Muguruza from the second round of the US Open in New York.

The 12th-seeded Muguruza began the match strongly on Wednesday, opening up a 5-1 lead in the first set as she dominated the early exchanges against a nervous Muchova, reports Efe news.

That was as good as it got for the former Wimbledon and French Open champion, as the Czech youngster got a foothold in the match, winning two games as Muguruza won the first set 6-3.

The unseeded Czech qualifier, ranked 202 in the world, took control of the proceedings in the second set as she grew into the contest, winning the final two sets 6-4, 6-4.

Muchova will face 18th-seeded Ashleigh Barty from Australia in the third round.
