Mangaluru: Police seize 780 tonnes sand stored illegally in private properties

Mangaluru, Sep 13: On definite information of illegally stored sand, police conducted raids on private properties at Valachil, Adyar and Arkula on Thursday, September 13. They called officials of mining and geology to the spot and seized 78 loads of sand weighing 780 tonnes.

The approximate cost of seized sand is Rs 5,00,000. Investigation is in progress to find the culprit who stored such huge quantity of sand and the purpose behind it. The sand seized was handed over to the deputy director, department of mining and geology, Mangaluru, for further action.

The operation was conducted by Mangaluru south sub division ACP K Ramarao together with south sub division anti rowdy squad, Mangaluru rural police station inspector and staff.

    It is very difficult to get sand nowadays. Sandmining weakens river beds and is not advisable. There must be some alternative to this sand so that people can construct nice houses and properties

    This is just tip of the ice burg shown to us readers. This sand mafia issue is well connected, deeply rooted though it is sand. Dealers make their money and officials get their good will. So rich and influential may be few politicians as well are dealers are involved in this case. Hence big money involved in every transaction. On a daily basis illegal sand mining goes on under the nose of officials, but when they do not get what they want, it gets seized..!!
    Legalize sand mining & let it happen in proper channels. !! Bridges may not collapse, few other collapses may not happen. Save earth legally.!!

    This quantity of seizure is just 10 percent of total hoardings by mafia..... What about other remainings.... ? Check the flats/mall and other structures where construction work is going on..... check the vehicle which did not move for weeks/months in garrage/highways......

    Why can't the government control irregular activities??. I hope there is a nexus between politicians and mining barons. Let the government control and sell sand at reasonable rates from its own outlets instead of issuing permits. This will stop smuggling and all other irregular activities related to sand mining.

    Best is first control the builders and ask for details from where they getting sand and proof.legal sand buy should have proof when not how did they manage to buildings to raise.

    This year you will get thousands of load of sand accumulated in the river due to land slide and flash flood..definitely rates to go down
