Udupi, Nov 1: At the muncicipal session of the city municipality convened on Friday October 31, it was decided to hold a detailed investigation into the rumour that the corpse of a woman was found in the garbage dump of the city at Beedinagudde. The session also decided to take legal action against those who spread this news, if it is found that no such corpse ever existed there.

The monthly session was chaired by municipal president Dinkar Shetty. The councillors raised the above topic, and said that efforts are being made since about a week to tarnish the image of the municipal adminsitration, by giving wide publicity to the rumour that the mortal remains of a woman was found at the Beedinagudde garbage dump a few days back. A few said, that this was the handiwork of a muncipal councillor, who wanted to damage the reputation of the municipality and to get publicity for himself, by fuelling the rumour.

Councillor Kiran Kumar demanded for holding a detailed investigation into the episode and for cancelling the membership of the councillor concerned, if found guilty of engaging in vilification campaign for personal benefit. He also asked the administration to levy the entire cost the municipality has been incurring to dig out the dump to find out the truth about the existence of the corpse, on the said councillor.

Another councillor Mohan Upadhya supported this demand,  and opined that the councillor in question could have informed either the municipal president or the police at the first instance, instead of rushing to the press and making a fuss about it. This publicity stunt has cost the municipality dearly in the form of hiring of JCBs and other digging work, he rued.
