Kundapur, Dec 21: While dairy farming is considered a traditional occupation, an educated woman from Kundapur has turned it into a profitable business by giving it a modern touch.

Chaitra V Adapa, president of Kailkere milk producer’s women’s cooperative society has completed her graduation but selected dairy farming only due to her interest in it.

She started the occupation in 2002 but decided to use technology and adopted modern methods to achieve better results.

At her dairy in Kailkere, Molahalli village, she purchased developed cattle breeds, put up modern sheds, installed a gober gas plant and adopted a technology where slurry is sprayed directly into the garden. She has purchased grass cutting machine, machine to convert areca skin as food for cattle, milking machine and has become a successful dairy farmer.

Today, she has more than 30 milking cows belonging to Jersey, HF, Savar, Geer breeds that supply 125 liters milk to the dairy.

She does continuous research on dairy farming. As she comes from agricultural family and is a farmer, the cattle urine, cow dung and slurry gets used up completely for farming. She grows grass on a three acre land spraying cow dung and slurry through sprinkler and the grass grows well. It is an excellent nutrition for the cows.

Cows are tied in the shed in three rows. Cleanliness is given importance to prevent mosquitoes and flies. The place for calves is also maintained.

Research teams from different places visit to see the dairy and conduct studies on it. She guides enthusiasts who want to start dairy farming. She is also experienced in areca farming, coconut farms, pepper and paddy cultivation. She is a model for those who hesitate to be farmers.

Chaitra is pro social and always interested to serve the society. She works for the progress of milk producer’s cooperative society by being its president. She is also the president of Kailkere school old student’s association and director of Molahalli agricultural service cooperative society.

KMF impressed with the high quality grass grown by her using organic manure, has presented an award to her. Her achievement has made local milk producers association proud. Her farm is shown to new growers to inspire them to put up similar farms.

The violence perpetrated by Hindu organizations in the name of cow protection impelled Father of nation Mahatma Gandhi to shun the term in his later years. He consciously chose terms like ‘gau seva’ (caring for the cow) or ‘pashu-sudhaar’ (improvement of livestock).

Congratulations Mrs. Chaitra for this caring and success. Hope this is lessons for those 'Gau Rakshaks' spreading terror in the name of 'lynching'.
