Karwar, Dec 30: The presence of mind of bus driver and the intelligence of a lorry driver in front of the bus have saved the lives of seventy bus passengers in Arabail Ghat section here.

The bus was being driven on the slopes of Arabail Ghats, Yellapur, Uttara Kannada district when the brakes of the bus failed. Lorry driver Iranna who was driving his lorry in front of the bus and North Western Karnataka Transport Corporation bus driver Katthikanapur saved bus passengers risking their lives. The bus driver repeatedly hit the bus behind the lorry to reduce the speed of the bus and stop it.

The KA 26 F 1025 bus belonging to Gadag depot was on its way from Hubli to Karwar. When it reached Arabail slopes, the brakes of the bus failed. But the bus which was moving fast on the slopes could not be controlled by the driver. Therefore, there were high chances of the bus toppling in the roadside ditch.

Passengers in the bus were anxious. Meanwhile, manure laden lorry driver Iranna was driving in front of the bus. He reckoned the brake fail of the bus after the bus hit the lorry twice, and he let the bus hit the lorry repeatedly and helped the bus driver to reduce speed.

The driver managed to reduce the speed and moved for about 4 kilometers and stopped after covering Arabail Ghat slopes. People, who gathered after the bus stopped, commended lorry driver Iranna. The rear portion of the lorry and the front portion of the bus are damaged.
