India Shamed and Shocked by Monsters of Mangalore : NDTV

Maya Sharma - NDTV

Jan 26: India has been shamed again. Goons of a right wing Hindu outfit Sri Ram Sena in Mangalore barged into a pub and beat up women over the weekend - in its latest round of moral policing.

Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has reacted to the incident in Mangalore saying those responsible will be taken to task. He said that the police has been given full authority to take appropriate measures.

The women's only fault was that they were found in the pub. Members of the Sri Ram Sena, who carried out the attack, justified their shameful actions.

More than 13 people have been arrested for the vicious attack as outrage over the incident spreads across the country.

The miscreants have been sent to judicial custody till January 27 and have not been allowed bail. The miscreants have been charged with criminal assault, intimidation, outrage of modesty and criminal trespass.

About 40 men were involved in the attack. Among the arrested are the district secretary and the joint convenor of the Sri Ram Sena.

A special team has been set up to arrest those responsible for the attack. The incident took place over the weekend after the men, completely unrepentant, say they received complaints suggesting the women were dancing 'obscenely' in the pub and they decided to act.

The hooligans chased the girls out, attacked men who tried to protect them, there are also reports that the girls were molested.

"So far we have arrested some people and we are further investigating the situation, we will take strong action," said A M Prasad, Inspector General, West Mangalore.

Talking to NDTV, Karnataka Home Minister VC Acharya said action was being taken against the perpetrators.

This is sadly not an isolated incident of groups taking the law into their own hands - churches and prayer halls around Mangalore were attacked just a few months ago over alleged conversions.

In Bangalore, rave parties on the outskirts of the city were raided - not by police - but by members of the Kannada Rakshana Vedike.

A state that once had a strong image of peace and tolerance seems to be heading in a very different direction now.

BJP Condemns Mangalore Pub Attack

NEW DELHI: BJP President Rajnath Singh on Monday condemned the attack on women in a Mangalore pub and said he will hold discussions with the Karnataka chief minister on the issue.

About 15 to 20 activists, reportedly belonging to Sri Ram Sene, had barged into a local pub in Mangalore yesterday and beaten up women guests accusing them of behaving in an "obscene manner."

"The act is condemnable and whoever is responsible need to be booked and justice need to be delivered," Singh told reporters here.

"I would be holding discussions with Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on the issue on Monday in Bangalore," he added.

He would be taking a halt in Bangalore on his way to Mysore where he will attend a rally.

Mangalore incident is Talibanisation of India: Renuka

Union Women and child development minister Renuka Chowdhury likened the incident to Talibanisation. "This is Talibanisation of India, it will not be tolerated. I will approach the EC to disenfranchise the organisation involved in this and those associated with it. It is unfortunate that this incident comes two days before the girl child day. These people are not ready for the Republic of India."

The Sena says it will repeat such attacks despite the huge public outcry across the country.

"There are some activities going on here that spoil Hindu tradition. We've just shown our frustration at that assault on Indian tradition. We don't like such indecent behaviour and tried to stop it,” said Sri Rama Sena spokesperson, Dinakar.

But Congress sought to play it down. Part spokesperson Veerappa Moily said, “I can’t call it as a Hindu group. It’s an act of hooliganism. No people will be allowed to do that. Taking the law into their own hands won’t be allowed”.

Hinduism is the predominant religion of the Indian subcontinent and has always kept its high standards all the time. It has been flourished by great people like swamy vivekananda, ramakrishna paramahamsa and others. And no where in Baghawat Gita does it mention that we can beat up and molest women, attack minorities worship place like churches in our society.Women has always been respected in our society.

I being an Hindu wonder why people like Pramod Muthalik and his his so called taliban organization can even think about doing such a Brutality in the name of God.By doing this they are not only spoiling the Holy image of hinduism, but also giving a tight slap to all Indians. These organization should be banned and all culprits should be punished or hanged.

We all know that there are so many pubs in Bangalore and which are frequented by lots of young crowds. Such areas are never targeted by the Sri Ram Sena. Why? Because they are scared that they will be thrashed over there. Also they are scared that the people who frequent these places are the highly paid IT professionals who bring in so much revenue for the country. Thats why they targeted Mangalore which they thought they would get away with.

Useless lunatics, they thought by hitting women, they will show their machismo. But women of India have woken up and are educated and know their rights well. Just because these attackers' wives and sisters are illiterate and cower in fear does not mean that all the women will be intimidated. Its a good lesson taught to these Muthalik's donkeys who accept his word as if its coming from GOD

Its not the current act which is shameful in itself but the consequences of it in the future which are catastrophic for India.

If you do not like your daughters to go to Pubs then its time that u start educating them, for if you want globalization to improve your life be prepared to also see global culture also seep in. You cannot have your cake and eat it too

Converting people also a kind of terrorism.Christain Missionareis also come under same group. We need more & more organisation like RSS,BHAJRANG DAL,SHIV SENA,SRI RAM SENA, BJP , VHP, HINDU JAGARANA VEDIKE ETC. FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR COUNTRY & OUR CULTURE. Girls going to PUB for drinking, smoking, dancing, are against our culture. Moral policing required to avoid above & maintain our society clean. I don't understand why people are blaming BJP , V S ACHARYA & YEDIYURAPPA. In delhi rapes are happening in moving cars , recently a girl kidnapped & raped & thrown out of the car in delhi's posh area. For this no one blames SONIA,MANMOHAN SINGH,SHEILA DIXIT & CONGRESS PARTY. In a nut shell whatever happening in BJP RULED STATE IS WRONG & CONGRESS RULED STATE ARTE OK. I dont know how and why this Govt got elected. An incompetent Govt. who cannot uphold the rule of law has no business to be ruling Karnataka (which was one of the best in the country some years ago). The question is: Why is the Govt. not taking swift and tough action against the violators of the law who have the cheek to call themselves members of the Sena (of a benevolent just and peaceful Hindu King and an avatara of God) ?

Finally, why are the people of Mangalore not organising a citywide rally in Protest? If this continues let them call for a national rally. To put this matter at the back-burner may cost everyone in the State and even the whole country dearly one day anarchy. We should not commit the sin of omission. Silence is tantamount to tacit approval.

How many of us go to vote during election time? Most of our names keep missing from the voters list.

How many of us take the trouble to make sure our names are included in the list? Shall we all stand united and start working from today, to make sure all our names are included in the voters list? Shall we today promise ourselves and spread the message to all in our homes/neighborhood to wake up, think and cast your valuable vote, choose the right leader from the right party, if not very soon Mangalore will be another “Kandhmal”

India was not shamed. yes this is wrong act. It might be due to enemity of the pub owner or any thing else. THIS INCIDENT cannot be compared to the pride of india. Law enforcement agencies should be made responsible for it.And talibanisation of india cannot occur because hindus oppose each other i.e. they are never orthodox but accept change easily.

I don't think the Bajarang Dal & Rama Sena have any right to lay their hands on anyone, except on their family . How dare they touch these girls? If they felt that the girls were misbehaving, they could have brought it to the notice of the concerned authorities. Don't they have a mouth? Are they our fathers, brothers or uncles?

Before trying the discipline others, discipline yourselves! It is because of people like you that the name of our peace loving state is getting ruined. It is because of people like you, people like me (a nri) is getting scared to come. I come to Mangalore every year for a holiday but this year, i should think twice! I am just like one of those girls. How can you I feel safe in my own state with a bunch of people like you roaming around? Indian Government... ITS TIME YOU WAKE UP!!!

Rama's men have taken very good care of the Seethas in Mangalore. Congratulations Sri Ram Sena. What next? Broad day light rape of Seethas in Mangalore. Welcome to the 21st century. Mangalore leads the way to Talibanisation of India and transform it into another Afghanistan and Pakistan. Please welcome your comrades Bajrang Dal and your god fathers BJP, Shiv Sena and RSS for mass gang rape of Seethas in Mangalore. WHY ARE YOU DEFAMING HINDUISM?

There are some groups of people who think that they can get away with whatever they do which includes spilling blood, beating armless people to death. Is this a bravery? Beating weak, armless innocents is not bravery. Even if anyone manage to escape after commiting such crimes, will he live his life peacefully? When we donot have the ability to create a leg of tiny creature, how we can destroy a life? Gang attacks under the shelter of politicians and police is a coward act. Repent before it is too late. End of the day victim is winner no matter he is died or alive.

Media you have done a great job on the Republic Day. Hats off to you. Now pursue the case. Actually there is no fear of the consequences, for they know that they have Godfathers to rescue them. Media, you have begun a good work but you need to be vigilant to see that the culprits are punished as per the law and there is no political interference to set them free. It is high time to ban all sorts of terrorist outfits. In this case people have been assaulted, terrorised and particularly women have been humiliated.

Thank you Daijiworld/NDTV for the coverage. This is not the first or isolated incident in Mangalore carried on by Bajrangdal/ Ramsene co-groups of BJP/VHP. So far their bosses are in power whom they have to fear? When the public outcry reaches to a maximum current BJP administration may maximum arrest the culprits and appoint a commission requesting to find reason for such vandalism and thus to find a way to vindicate the culprits . One to two year back same groups beat women and children in a prayer hall. Are the culprits punished till now? If they are really serious about for total prohibition of alcohol in Karnataka state, why can’t their own BJP govt in taking the required action? As you have rightly reported , these groups have already destroyed strong image of peace and tolerance in Karnataka.

Yes, if someone ask youngsters to concentrate on education, good culture and bright future, it’s wrong to advice, instead of this we need to follow western culture. No need to have a safety precaution. The need of the day is, more pubs, bar and restaurants and ladies bars. No problem if our youngsters get HIV/AIDS or become drug addicts! No problem if they did not take care of their parents, no problem if they don’t respect India and their future...

Mangalore has been the laboratory of all experiments of Extremist of one religious faction that has been operating in the state through its political face currently ruling the state. Well history of Mangalore goes this way. A political strong hold of Congress, which at one point could think of vielding any of its candidates in the region and garner the seat without any trouble, (well upto the time of Moily, Blasius Dsouza, Poojari) Gradually lost this sure shot ground to BJP through a continued efforts of the BJP workers. Soon this land became a strong hold, that it seemed a experimental ground for extrimist activities. Recall the years back incidence of Surathkal, that we could call a sparking begin to those laboratory experiments. (Mangalore came to a stand still all of a sudden from Udupi to Mangalore due to an incidence at Surathkal). Then started sparking off many of the experiments in Mangalore due to its strong hold of representations at State and Center. Recall the events that have unfolded in the last 2 years. 1) .... 2)..... 3).....Recent ones, to attack the Churches. Well guarded by the Government. All seems to have gone under carpet now. Well, First incidence can be treated as accidental (or just reactive) Second is intentional .... Well third onwards there cannot be anything than be called a trend. Well, Few questions to ask to the state government.

      1) When will the activities that happen with such a media galore, that go completely noticed with public, media, attention of the officials, STOP......(Atleast in Mangalore?)

      2) Who will blame whom in the fore running elections (Certainly Congress on its toes for a subject...., Gowda waiting for one point of attack on Yadiyurappa....., Yadiyurappa distancing himself saying its not under its perview to observe extremist like the Sena.....)

THE BJP IS EXPOSED. It took more than 24 hrs for the CM & HM to react and give statement on the issue, that too after heighted media coverage on seriousness of the matter. The half hearted response/reaction from the ruling BJP of the state itself shows/proves that the shameless act of Bajarangi/Rama sena/RSS was carried out at their behest under moral policing pretext. Which is even more evident in BJP leaders talk (a half baked/hearted out of pure guilt within subject diverting approach) The role of the media is highly appreciated, specially the daijiworld which was one of the responsible front runner in covering the issue.
