Udupi, Feb 13: Persons with hemophilia can look forward to better times, as the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, USA is hopeful of initiating a twinning programme with the Manipal Hemophilia Society, supported by Manipal University, in the near future.

The team from the US, representing World Federation of Hemophilia, concluded their brief visit to the University here on Thursday February 12.  Dr Prasad Mathew, leader of the team comprising Jane Ellen and Pamela Owens, said he was impressed with the already existing infrastructure. "It will facilitate the programme immensely," was his wrap-up remark.

He appreciated the work being done by the president of Manipal Hemophilia Society, Dr Annamma  Kurien and her team and the support being provided by Manipal University. Pro-Chancellor, Dr H.S. Ballal assured the delegation that a specialty clinic would be set up to take better care of the afflicted persons.

On behalf of the university, Dr Ballal assured the team of every support. "Ours is a university with a global reach. So, I expect the association with the US University to go a long way," he said.  He thanked the team for providing Factors to treat the patients.

The team had shipped out Factors to Manipal before leaving their country. It was received here on Tuesday and administered to the hemophiliacs.

Dr Prasad said the World Federation of Hemophilia was keen that one centre should work with another for better results. He noted,  that 80 per cent of the afflicted persons were from developing countries. So, an inter-centre collaboration would be more beneficial in every way," he added.
