Bangalore, May 9: The government has decided to bring ammendments to the Karnataka Control of Organized Crimes Bill, by adding stringent provisions like awarding of death or life sentences in cases where involvement with terrorism of a person is proved, imposing of penalty amounting to five lac rupees to the guilty etc.

The state cabinet that met under the presidentship of chief minister B S Yeddyurappa on Friday May 8, took this decision. Rural development and panchayatraj minister Shobha Karandlaje informed at a press conference later, that an ordinance will soon be issued in tune with the above decision. The bill, tabled at the Belgaum session of the assembly, is being adopted as an act through the ordinance, duly strengthened with the said ammendments.

Terrorism is being regarded as an organized crime and the penalty for the crime is being raised from the present one lac rupees to five lac rupees, she added. "At the time of investigating, the assets of those involved will be impounded. The time limit prescribed for holding investigations and   filing the charge sheet has been increased from the current six months to one year," she explained.

The Poison Act - 1974, which was hitherto under the domain of the health department, will be brought under the revenue department, as the health department suffers from shortage of personnel. This will enable cases like acid attacks, hooch tragedy etc., to be expedited, she added.
