Washington, Aug 10: A statue of Mahatma Gandhi facing the Bay Bridge took people by surprise when they found a pair of red glowing eyes on the effigy. A prankster is believed to have placed LED lights on the eyes of the bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi, situated near the Ferry Building.
Installed back in 1988, the statue is reported to have been vandalized numerous times. The spectacles on the statue have reportedly gone missing more than once. The city’s Arts Commission, which supervises the statue and other public works of art, keeps spare spectacles in case the ones on the statue go missing.
Pictures of the incident went viral after a Redditor, VickyOneTime, shared the images on social media. The Redditor along with sharing the image, titled it, 'What I can only imagine was Winston Churchill’s nightmare'.
The photo circulated, does not have a date and shows an unidentified man climbing to attach the lights on the statue’s eyes.
Since the time it was shared on social media, the picture has gone viral. Opinions of people were divided over the defacement of the statue. Whilst some took it in good humour, the other half criticized it.
