Mangalore, Jul 5: After visiting the areas in Ullal affected by sea erosion on Sunday July 5, the minister for ports, inland water transportation, environment and ecology, Krishna J Palemar said that his department had prepared a blueprint for a permanent solution to sea erosion along the coastal stretch under the National Coastal Protection Project (NCCP) of 2010-2018.

Speaking to the media, Palemar added, “A pilot project has been prepared by the National Coastal Protection Project (NCCP) for the year 2010-2018 for the coastal line along the country and the work will be started after the blueprint is cleared by the technical expert committee. The department of ports will submit a blueprint for the Rs 280 crore project on July 10”.

Talking about the blueprint, Palemar said, “It involves the installation of a geo-textile tube to prevent erosion which will be a lasting solution to the problem of erosion. Eighty percent of the cost for the project will be borne by the Asian Development Bank scheme with the rest being met by the state government. About Rs 216 crore will be spent on Ullal area alone.”

“The NCCP is for coastal stretches in Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, so if the other states delay in preparing blueprints it might be problematic to our state”, he added.

Palemar said that the temporary solution was estimated at Rs 1.7 crore with the cost likely to increase during the rainy season and the state government will release Rs 3 crore for temporary relief in Ullal.

“There are 22 houses in Ullal which face the threat of sea erosion”, he said adding, “the actual cost has not been estimated yet and the department of ports will work out the statistics.

Meanwhile, MLA U T Khader urged the minister that temporary measures to prevent sea erosion be implemented immediately along three stretches on the Ullal coast.

He said that erosion was severe at Kotepura, Mogaveerapatna, and Hilary Nagara. The boulders dumped at these places had already sunk, so these areas need immediate attention.

Palemar also visited Mukkacheri, Hilary Nagar, Kaika Road, Kotepura, Mogaveerapatna and other coastal areas in Ullal along with assistant commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalakatti, former MLA Jayaram Shetty and other officials.

Once again politicians are on duty in the shores of ullal, what is going on since so many years visits by politicians will not help because one or two of them even travelled to france to have look at what was done there but not implemented here, surprisingly still permits are given for people to build houses so near to sea, seriously there should be a team of indian and foriegn engineers deployed to take of the problem and work out good project to over come the on going trouble.instead publishing photos of politicians visiting the place and making a big drama...?

I strongly agree with the statements of Ms.Eulalia and Mr. Manohar. year after year during monsoon ministers from State and Central, equally throng Ullal Beach area, do beach yaatra, blurt out promisses in front of media.Release few crores.and forget the issue once and for all till next monsoon season.Few of the ministers went on study tour to foreign country to see physically their Technology to arest sea erosion.NITK also has sugested few measures to arest the erosion. But Lack of sincierity from the Politicians has resulted this sad episode.

Good news. But seeing is believing! Good luck Ullal-kers. Global warming, volcanic activities in the oceans & land reclamation pushes the sea to the low-laying mainland along the coast line rendering poor fisher folks homeless.

How can houses be allowed to build just next to the sea . The right solution will be to shift them to safer places.

This is the annual monsoon ullal beach picnic for ministers which have been going on for the past several years. MP’s, MLA’s and ministers of all the parties have attended these picnics year after year. Results so far = NEGATIVE. However, it can be seen that Mr. U.T. Khader is actively and sincerely working for the people of his constituency.

It is amazing that the people are dare enough to stay there. Sea may swallow them at any point of time. Another amazing thing is people have GREAT IDEA of putting their money to build RCC establishments very near to such a horrible risky place. Government should immediately evacuate and delare atleast 1000 mtrs near sea shore and rehabilitate them keeping all politics out. It is an urgent requirement.

Thanks Daijie, good coverage. Only fear is that year after year our monsoons get worse & more n more houses get washed out or damaged. This leaves behind thousands of people homeless & it is a bitter fact. It is also a fact that our politicians, govt officials, concerned departments wake up just when situation has gone beyond control. When we all know that sea erosion is so common in our coastal belt, why havnt any authorities thought of prevention measures? Why do we wait for disasters to happen n then talk of solutions? Isnt it time or rather too late to think of a permamnent solution for this? why go in for temporary solution n waste public funds? Rather set aside these funds for those who are homeless now & get going with permanent solutions, if any ?? I hope we know the seriousness of being homeless..!! It is High Time that we act rather than pretend to act ..!!
