Mangalore, Jul 8: In an incident wherein precautionary measure taken up by the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) to control artificial floods turned out to be troublesome to public has been reported from Kodical in the city here.

On orders by MCC executive engineer the works of digging up roads at J B Lobo Road here as a precautionary measure to avert dangers of artificial floods has posed inconvenience to commuters on the road as they have to take a roundabout route. On Sunday July 5 the road was dug up for smooth flow of storm water in the area during which the damage occurred to water pipeline resulting in deficiency of water supply to the residents of the area for whole two days.

The locals are enraged by this move of the MCC and have opposed the decision of digging up roads during the peak rainy season though aware of the persisting problem of artificial floods in the area. They reason out that MCC was negligent by not taking up the works during the summer season.

Residents further have blamed that the situation arose as the residents were not informed of the works. While in some areas the MCC has made an arrangement to supply water, the works on damaged pipeline could be undertaken only after rains subside, informed local corporator amd former mayor Shashidhar Hegde.

Meanwhile it was tough time for the people of Kottar Chowki, Malemar and surrounding areas, on Tuesday after rain water entered their houses, shops etc. Some of the areas were cut off from the main road after connecting roads were marooned owing to overflowing drainages. Water even managed to sneak in a hotel at Kadri hills.

Many of low lying areas these years are becoming residential layouts, or so. The place here was paddy field decades ego. People have never learnt from Rainy season over years, & has been committing same mistakes. I feel Ravish Pedamale has rightly said it.

Kottara chowki is the venue for flooding - every year since decades. the people to be blamed are the ones who have built commercial buildings and residential buildings in the swamp area. its a low lying area - so be prepared to get flooded when it rains heavily. dont complain when it happens next time - no one can do anything if the construction itself is in such areas.

See the fate of Mangalore development without proper planning. Our MCC and corporators sometimes do yoga ( sirsasna ) inside the meeting hall. If they are really qualified and care for public then we would have a decent life and well planned development. Some corporators are for more than 15 years and have not been able to give any suggestions or solve problems in tier areas . Youth educated should come forward to take position and develop city.

Rain is god wish . We have been poured water from heaven , but we failed to save & conserve for use. Let us hope future will be better with less corrupt people join politics.

I agree with other comments here. - We have ignored our environment - We have ignored a good city planning for short-term gains - This is not the time to engage in blame game. Let''s come togther and figure out what needs to be done - Mangaloreans shouldn''t forget these incidents. We should plan appropriately so they dont happen every year.

The same problem is faced all over India. Center has to come up with a common guideline for engineers to how to tackle these situations efficiently so that engineers all over India will get requisite information & guidelines from a central database.

When such things happens, we should find the solutions for it so that we may not face same situation again rather than blaming others.

Such problems are created by man himself than nature. With growing popoulation & urbanisation, paddy fields are converted to residential layouts, following with mud filling. Automatically, in event of heavy rains, unlike earlier where water used to collect in paddy fields, in case of high tides in sea, there is less space for outlet now, ie. extra water to stay. They problem may continue in future as virtually paddy fields around Mangalore are wiped out. Man destroys everything for his personal benefits, & start blaming others or nature !

Dont blame the MCC and politicians now. Mangaloreans have hurt the enviornment, destroyed forests and trees and restorted to modern ways of living. Compounds turned to complexes, houses into storeyed buildings, green has lost its sheen and nature has its fury upon you guys. Madiddu undu maraya.
