Mangalore, Jul 8: The heavy rainfall in the coastal district continued causing widespread damage and destruction all around the district. Two people have been killed and the damage to private property in the district is substantial.

Veerayya, a labourer, drowned in river water near Dambel in Urva Store police station limits. In the evening, Ashraf drowned in the sea near Someshwar Uchila, and the complaint has been lodged with Ullal police in this regard.

But his body has not been located yet. It is said that Ashraf was standing by the sea shore with his friends when a high tide pulled him in.

Eight houses have been completely damaged and 281 houses in various parts of the district are partially damaged as per the information given by the district administration. The loss of crops and other damages are also being estimated.

Meanwhile, a main water pipeline has been damaged near Capitanio and the rainfall has been hampering repair work. So, an interruption in the water supply to the city is a possibility as the water leakage that began in the evening has continued into the night.

In a separate incident near Morgans Gate in the city, the negligence of the city corporation has irked the public and caused them to protest for some time during the late evening. The corporation workers had begun drainage work in the middle of road with out putting up any warning signs.

As a result, a couple who were travelling on a bike, fell into the dug-up hole alerting the public. The couple escaped with minor injuries but the locals who gathered there demanded that the local corporator visit the spot and protested against the negligence of the corporation staff. The arrival of the police helped control the situation and the bike was pulled out of the hole.

People, don''t you think we appoint a mayor and other office bearers and pay them for a reason. When will hold them responsible for these shoddy jobs? Fighting about religious issues only not good enough, we need to understand our rights and responsibilities also and fight for them. Look at the sidewalks in Mangalore. Don''t you think the contractors can do a better job covering them after they dig. Don''t you think our engineers can plan keeping rainy season in mind at least don''t you think they can erect some signs after digging such a hole? Come on get the adminstration to answer these issues.

Please dont play with fire and water.. So many times very experienced players have died with these two things. Having said this I enjoy listening to the sound of water falling on the trees and also the sound of cricket and frogs during rainy season
