Bangalore, Jul 10: Even as Karnataka’s cultural capital of Mysore, which has been caught in serious communal clashes since the beginning of this month which claimed two lives and resulted in scores of people getting injured due to stabbing and other violent incident is yet to return to normalcy, the B S Yeddyurappa regime has gone ahead in setting the ball rolling for the ensuring Dasara festivities.

The high power committee on Mysore Dasara, which is known the world over for its grandeur and gala festivities besides the glittering jumbo savari carrying the scion of erstwhile Mysore royal family Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar in a golden throne, at its meeting under the chairmanship of Yeddyurappa in Vidhana Soudha has decided to release Rs 6 crore for the celebrations commencing from September 19.

The chief minister, who is also the chairman of the high power panel, said preparations for this year’s Dasara festivities have begun more than two months earlier unlike in the past. The festivities would begin on September 19 and conclude with the spectacular jumboo savari on September 28.

Yeddyurappa said the meeting came up with a suggestion to declare holiday for schools during Dasara festivities to enable students and their families to visit Mysore during the festival.

A final decision on grant of holidays would be taken after holding consultation with Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishveshwara Hagde Kageri and education department officials, he said.

Earlier, the chief minister while addressing the meeting expressed concern over the recent communal clashes in Mysore and said the security would be beefed up in the city during the festival. All those responsible for the recent clashes would be strictly dealt with sternly, he said.

The government had released Rs 10 crore for the festivities last year and the district administration had saved Rs 1.20 crore.

Pointing out that there were complaints from tourists on account of the hardhisps faced by them during the Dasara festival in Mysore, he said the government would take all neecessary steps to streamline traffic and vehicle parking problems besides making foolproof arrangements for ensuring the safety, comfort and well-being of the domestic as well as foreign tourists.

To a question, Yeddyurappa said a suitable personality would be asked to inaugurate the event.

Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Shobha Karandlaje, who is also the Mysore District in-charge, disclosed that a website on Dasara festival would be launched soon.

She felt a grant of  Rs 6 crore would be sufficient to conduct the festivities this time as all civic works had already been taken up from the Rs 100 crore special fund released by the Chief Minister last year for development of infrastructure in the city.

Local artistes would be given preference and sportspersons from the State would he honoured during the event. Besides holding air show, steps would be taken to provide publicity to the festival at the global level, the minister said.

Local Congress MLA and former minister Tanvir Sait, who is the son of former minister Azeez Sait, urged the Chief Minister to strengthen the police force in Mysore to ensure that there were no security lapses during the festival as lakhs of tourists would be visiting Mysore for the world-famous Dasara festival.

Director General of Police Ajay Kumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner P Manivannan, Mysore City Corporation Commissioner K S Raikar, Mysore Urban Development Authority Commissioner P C Jayanna, Karnataka Housing Board Chairman G T Deve Gowda, MLAs H S Shankaralinge Gowda, H P Manjunath, MLCs Thontadarya and N Manjunath besides Exhibition Authority Chairman B P Manjunath, and others attended the meeting.

Quote from the article: ....the glittering jumbo savari carrying the scion of erstwhile Mysore royal family Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar in a golden throne..... Jumbo Savari as a phrase was in vogue originally when on Vijayadashami day the King seated inside the Golden Houda mounted atop the Royal Elephant used to go in procession to Banni Mantap to pay obeisance to the Banni Tree (Also known as Shami tree and botanically as Prosopis spicigera).

After the abolition of the Privy purse in 1971 Mysore Royalty has continued this practice and all festivities connected with Dasara celebrations is carried out in accordance with age old tradition as a private affair. Though the scion of the Mysore Royal Family still does the Banni pooja but located within the Bhuvaneshwari Temple inside the Palace precincts by symbolically traveling in a Silver chariot along with his kinsman and retainers.

During the first Nine days (Navaratri), he does ascend the legendary Golden throne which is said to have belonged to the Panadavas during the Mahabharat times. Even this is a private affair and but in recent years the most of the visual media has started covering this event.

Many of the comments are very silly and bear religious and communal bais. Please remember we spend money on Independence day, Republic day and Rajotsava day also. All these are absolutely necessary. Similarly Dasara is the identity of our state. World over Karnataka is known for Dasara just as Kerala is known for Onam. Dasara is not a hindu, muslim, jain or christian festival. It is our state festival were the entire state participates and celebrates.

We have thousands of guests from all over the world comming to witness the grandeur of these celebtations. Let us therefore support Yeddi on this issue and see that this year''s dasara turns out to be the best ever. We owe this not only to ourselves but our state and also the thousands of tourists who will be visiting our state. Please stop communalising Dasara.

Dr. Haneef, Can you just clarify on this...1. Did any mosque is under government or all the money coletced from mosque given to govt where most of temples do. 2. Do you know what subsidy you get for visa for hajj pilgrimage & what subsidy any hindu get for pilgrimage in India? So dont compare all those things here. Everyone knows it.

Dasara is a world famous festival and is an integral part of our culture and ancient traditions. Good decision by the Government, we should celebrate Dasara in Pomp, style and Grandeur to keep our traditions alive.

Dasara is a ‘Nadahabba of Karnataka, a festival for Kannadigas irrespective of caste and creed they belong. The money spent by Karnataka Government is just a small INVESTEMENT, when compared to socio-economical benefits, RETURNS. The income generated by tourism and trade during this festive season, not only provides “Three time decent meal” plus additional source of income to locals, and also puts Karnataka on international map.

Moreover it is a much needed event for a strong secular state to express unity in diversity. When western countries and even few of our neighboring states are busy trying to hoist artificial events to attract foreigners, and boost up tourism, foreign investments, here we have age old, rich cultural event. Why don’t we all be part of it and reap the benefits? I am sure if Keralites had such an opportinity, they would have made the whole world to visit and witness this spectacular show.

Refer, http://mysoredasara.com/dasara/ for more details .Visit dasara festival with family and friends, for a change from hectic life style. I am sure your opinions will change.

Ofcourse govt could have utilized that money for other essential things. Mysooru Dasara is a festival of Land. Karnataka''s (Formerly Mysore state) own festival that attracts many people around India and the world. In order to showcase the rich tradition of our land reasonable money is required. Just please comment on what Mayavati is doing there who she boasted all along that she is the angel of poor and working for the up liftment of poor.

Hundreds of Crores for monument of her own statue plus her party symbol elephant. Even Chidambaram criticized it a lot. When compared to that Dasara expense is just Pea nuts.

If suppose the Govt. is spending on so called Haj Subsidy, it also spends crores of rupees on Amarnath Yatra and Hundreds of other Religious Issues. But will anybody explain me from whose and whicn Fund the Haj Subsidy is released? My impression is that it is not the Government''s money, but is our own (Pilgrim''s)money coming from the extra ordinary High Air Fare collected for this pilgrimage. Morever Muslims are least bothered about these kind of "SUBSIDIES" for their Holy Pilgrimage although they have got their own share in the Tax Payer''s Money, whether a small part of it goes to Haj Pilgrimage once in a year, or Hundreds of Yatras and Festivals of other Religions round the year. Anyway I am of the openion that there should be sensible balance in spending the Tax Payer''s money, as common man in India is in need of more relief than Festivity!

hello Shahnawaz Kukkikatte, every year crores of money going to government fund from the temples. From that fund if government spend some amount to Mysore Dasara Festival is not a big deal. This festival will develop our cultural & tourism.

Yes, I agree with the Mr. Shahnawaz. I am not against any festivals. But spending 6 crore on the festival is ridiculous. First There is so many problem going in Karnataka. Let him release some money for poor, provide basic amenities to so many poor people. So many roads has been damaged in this year rain . Let him release some money for repairing roads.

Government of karnataka released Rs 1 crore to ullala darga as grant. I dont think this money belongs either BJP party nor yedurappa`s personal donation. it is laso taxpayers money. So It is incorrect to say government utilises taxpayers money for dasara. Sarve Janaha Sukino bhavanthu
