Hike in Power Tariff Inevitable : Energy Minister

Bangalore, Jul 11 (DHNS): The Government had gone for a mega purchase of power to tide over the crisis in the last year.

A total of 6,463.48 million units of power was purchased paying a heavy price of Rs 13.60 per unit of power generated by private companies.

According to Energy Minister K S Eshwarappa’s reply to an unstarred question by Congress member S Ravi in the Legislative Council, the Government had no option but to purchase power from private companies to meet the demand in the last year. The Government purchased 135.26 mu of power at Rs 13.60 per unit from the GMR power plant. As much as 125.29 mu of power was purchased from Sree Rayalseema Power Corporation Ltd at Rs 8.76 per unit. The least price (Rs 3.18 per unit) is paid to power purchased from private mini hydel projects. From co-generation plants in sugar factories of the State the Government purchased 812.39 mu at Rs 6.12 per unit.

The Opposition members alleged that the Government purchased power by spending the huge amount only during the elections. Refuting the allegation Eshwarappa said the Government provided sufficient power even during the school exams and also after the polls. Only during the last week of June and first week of July it was inevitable to go for load-shedding. “Now, the situation has improved with increased water levels in reservoirs,” he said. The estimated total demand for power for 2009-10 was about 51,019 mu. The Government was expecting to meet the demand up to 44,550 mu from its generation stations, he said.

Hike in tariff

Eshwarappa said revision of power tariff was inevitable in the present situation. In the last year the Government spent a huge amount on purchase of power. The power tariff had not been revised since 2003, and that had made power supply companies face financial cruch. The Government had already submitted a proposal for upward revision of the tariff before the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission.

He was angry when the Opposition benches alleged that the entire State was in dark and the government had failed to tackle the power crisis. Pointing his fingers at the Opposition benches he said “Today we are suffering because of the omissions you committed”. Opposition benches were irritated by his statement. They asked the minister to withdraw his statement. But he did not budge. JD(S) leader M C Nanaiah intervened and asked the minister not to dilute the issue by holding the previous governments responsible for the situation. Chairman Veeranna Mathikatti assured the members of time for a detailed debate.

Encourage Solar energy, which is one time investment. Govt must give subsidy to solar installation, and should install these panels at all govt run organizations. This will save so much more power. Penalize all those responsible for street lights burning even at 9 in the morning.

Increase in Power Tariff. Can the Power Minister give a GEnuine Answer. He only says that he borrowed Power paying high price againt the returns he is getting from Domestic Users resulting in Loss. Now coming to the Real Fact as follows:

    1. Can the Power Minister disclose the names of all Industries, Commercial Establishments who have not paid their electricity Bills and have huge O/s for many years. Every Industry in Baikampady owes crores of rupees to MESCOM or KEB. I am writing only about Baikampady Ind. Area and if we add Peenya Ind. Area it could be unbelievable figure. Recovery of the Dues will ease all the problems of KEB.

    2. Power Theft. There is huge power theft and these goes hand in gloves with the department. Can the department tackle or solve this problem. They will not as it will cut down their monthly corrupted income.

    3. Subsidised Power for Elect. Board Employees. Need to immediately withdraw these facilities which is becoming a burden on Non KEB Users. Govt will not do it. It is time to change, if not, mark my words we the commonmen will have to dig our pockets to cover this increase.

Power every body wants power but none of the ruling parties want to give their people power in Karnataka. If people of the state wanted power then they would see the politicians giving it to them unfortunately people are corrupt and elect corrupt and inefficient representatives based on caste and religion creed and not based on efficiency and progress of the state.

I have been to different countries where there is very little natural resources yet the people are provided with power as low as rupees two and fifty paisa only, no doubt International Power Companies are rushing to India as they know the inefficient and corrupt government here. Even the gulf countries generate their own power and in the process they also convert sea water into drinking water, these gulf countries are like Mackey Mouse compared to our state, yet with efficiency there is continues power, water in plenty at a reasonable price. As long as people of the state keep electing corrupt rulers, they will continue to get step motherly treatment.

Power has always been a problem in Karnataka for over 2 decades unfortunately.Political parties have come ''into power'', filled their coffers, satisfied their craving for ''political power'' but the people continue to crave for ''power''. Irony of life is those who give power are actually craving for power.!! Instead of focusing on Kannada to be the medium of instruction, the leaders should focus on setting up power plants.

K S Eshwarappa’s information on power tariff increase is an additional burden on Karnataka people. The reason being that this BJP govt. paid crores of RS. to independent MLA''s , Reddy brothers & some desident MLA''s not to desert BJP & otherwise this GOVT. falldown. So reclaim that money, now slowly they put this burden on us general people.
