Udupi, Sep 19: “Banks are asked not to pressurise fisherwomen for repayment of loan,” said Karnataka Fisheries and Ports minister Kota Srinivas Poojary.

“The government is bound to waive Rs 60 crore loan borrowed by fisherwomen from nationalised banks during the year 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. The waiver will be limited to Rs 50,000 per person,” he said.

“The government has already set aside Rs 60 crores for the purpose and nationalised banks are asked to provide details of loans borrowed by fisherwomen,” he said.

Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Fish Marketing Federation president Yashpal Suvarna had initially raised the issue and brought it to the notice of the minister. Poojary promptly acted on the complaint.

Poojary held a meeting with district lead bank manager Rudresh and asked him to direct banks to not pressurise fisherwomen for loan repayment.
