Mumbai, July 17 (IANS) : A gleaming lunar silver-coloured Nano was handed over to a proud owner here Friday to mark the commercial rollout of the jellybean-shaped small car, which has been drawing global attention since the prototype was unveiled last year.

Ratan Naval Tata, the chairman of the $62.5-billion Tata group who had promised to deliver what he has been calling the "people's car" at just Rs.100,000 ($2,500) at factory gates, himself handed over the car keys to Ashok Vichare, a class I customs officer.

Tata also gave away the keys of the second, sunshine yellow, Nano to HDFC Bank employee Ashish Balakrishnan, while the third, a lunar silver, went to a representative of Kores India, which manufactures carbon paper and typing sheets.

"I hope the Tata Nano will bring motoring pleasure to those who will be buying their first car as also those who currently own cars but want a modern, contemporary, emission-friendly city car," said a beaming Tata.

Accepting the car keys from Tata, Vichare expressed his intention to drive down straight to the famous Siddhi Vinayak Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesh, and frequented by celebrities and commoners alike.

Accompanied by his wife, two children and mother, Vichare (59) drove off to the temple, just a stone's throw from Concorde Motors, the Tata's company outlet at Prabhadevi.

For Balakrishnan, it was a dream come true.

"There are three things in life which one cherishes - to own a house, buy a car and start a family. For me, the second dream is coming through," Balakrishnan, a 29-year old bachelor, said after getting the car key.

A business manager with HDFC Bank, Balakrishnan had opted for direct full payment for his vehicle. "I now hope I can now settle down with a family soon," he said with a smile.

The function attracted hundreds of curious onlookers, housewives, students and even some office-goers going home early.

Many of them have also booked and been allotted Nano vehicles in the draw held a few weeks ago, while some said they had come to see how the car looks before deciding to book it.

As Vichare's lunar silver car zoomed out of the showroom, on to the Mumbai roads, there were cheers and applause from the crowd gathered there since early afternoon to catch a glimpse of the world's cheapest family car.

He got Nano car but lost keys!

Ashish Balakrishnan's dream came true and then almost turned into a nightmare Friday evening. He now owns a Nano car but has lost its keys.

At a gala ceremony Tata Motors chairman Ratan Tata handed over the keys of the second Nano car to the 29-year-old bachelor who then said: "There are three things in life which one cherishes - to own a house, buy a car and start a family. For me, the second dream is coming through."

And then he lost the keys.

Tata Motors will hand over a duplicate set to Balakrishnan Saturday. His cousin will drive out the car.

A business manager with HDFC Bank, Balakrishnan had opted for direct full payment for his vehicle. "I hope I can now settle down with a family soon," he said with a smile.

I too had booked Nano but my allotment is in 2011. Is not that a long delay of two years in delivering my car? I had paid Rs.1,20,000/- in full during the booking period. They should speed up the delivery of all fully paid-up vehicles by early next year.

Nano is here atlast.I am sure most of the middle class who have schooters, Motor cycles will be tempted to go for this Nano as it offers more security in 4 wheel drive and the extra "Style" factor. I am sure families with two kids will prefer to enjoy driving with style in a car, than on a schooter which poses more danger to the life.Yes when we want more comfort we need to sacrifice more as Parking problems, traffic problems will come up. But there is bigger advantages too..The comfort, economy in fuel, the carbon emission control, more people can travel, less space in parking in comparision woth bigger cars etc. We need to thank the grate Indian dreamer who made it reality..Jai Ho India, Jai ho Ratan Tata..

True to you word, you have kept your promise in regard to the price, even in this inflationary and difficult times, Mr. Ratan Tata. Congratulations to you and your team on this wonderful achievement. Millions of people who used to drive two- wheelers thus far can now afford to enjoy the luxury of a small car, which will contribute to the road safety as well. May God Bless you further.

This is a good thing for an average Indian. Wonderful gift from Mr. Tata, a great humanitarian of modern times. Of course it may cause clogged streets but one must excercise responsibility.

where there is will there is a way. this is a another step forward for Tata and the pepole of india and to the world.pepole pay in thousands of dollers to buy a car. now they can buy a car for reasonable price. A price that should be for the houses and flats also should be set. so that everyone can own a small house, live a simple life without having to live in a street.Tata should consider this step. many Thanks to Tata and its group.

The "Nano" revolution is a new era in travel for the millions of people in India. It will save thousands of lives, because many families who were using two-wheelers will start buying Nano. Whenever I travel in the metro cities of India, my blood pressure shoot up by watching two adults and three children riding a two- wheeler like a circus format. Thank God for the Tata house to introduce this vehicle, which will fulfill a very basic need of thousands of ordinary families.

The Tata Nano is great value for money. Not the best performing car, it offers the comforts of a basic car for a family at little over the cost of a two wheeler. In millions of homes across India and probably in other developing countries where it will be marketed, families considering the purchase of a two wheeler will consider paying a little more for the luxury and status of owning a car. The other side of the equation is the certain environmental impact of such a development. As a responsible and developing nation, the government must undertake a study of the carbon footprint of this vehicle compared to a two wheeler and the perhaps the larger impact of hundreds of thousands of these cars clogging our roads and its impact on traffic movement and the collateral impact on the environment. The social benefit of cheap car probably comes at a huge cost to mother nature.
