Udupi, Sep 24: “As the operations of Brahmavar sugar factory are suspended, farmers in twin districts are finding their living difficult. Farmers are eager to grow profitable sugarcane as water is flowing through canals from the Varahi irrigation project. Therefore, Brahmavar sugar factory should be revived,” urged factory members in the annual meeting held in factory premises on Friday.
Expressing their dissatisfaction over delay in resuming operations even after urging for its revival during several annual meetings in the past, they suggested selling a portion of the land or collecting funds from any other sources and reviving the factory without further delay.
President H Jayasheela responding to the opinions of the members said that several meetings of district elected representatives, farmer’s leaders and administration board chaired by the district in-charge minister are already held in the office of deputy commissioner and it is decided to revive the factory by obtaining financial assistance from the government.
“A detailed project report by Mitcon consultancy and engineering services Pune is submitted to the government with a proposal requesting for Rs 30 crores assistance. A proposal of selling 20 acres factory land for government medical college or other government institutions for the factory revival is also submitted. The proposals are pending in government level,” he said.
“The former chief minister during his visit to Udupi in September 2018 has said that he will help for the revival of the factory and suggested to grow sugarcane with water available from Varahi irrigation project. Good quality seeds for greater yield are obtained from Mandya district and distributed among farmers. The seeds are available for farmers who plant them in October and November,” he said.
“The state government will be requested to provide Rs 30 crores and to sell land near the national highways to raise the further amount to revive the factory,” said factory president H Jayasheela Shetty.
