Udupi: Municipal Council distributes Scholarships to 178 SC/ST Students

: The local municipal council here organized a programme for the distribution of scholarships to the scheduled caste and scheduled tribe (SC/ST)students,  at Town Hall, here on Monday July 20, under the 18 percent Fund.  MLA Raghupati Bhat distributed scholarships worth Rs 3, 18, 900 to 178 SC/ST students. 
 
Speaking on the occasion, Bhat said that the municipal council has been distributing various facilities that are allocated for the progress of the SC/ST communities.  The state administration led by the BJP has released three crore rupees for the welfare of SC/STs, he revealed. 
 


Meanwhile, the municipality has forwarded a proposal for an additional financial assistance of two crore rupees in this regard.  Besides, the state administration has also been trying to distribute nutrients to them.  The discussions initiated by the municipal council are under way with KMC Hospital, Manipal, to introduce a health insurance scheme with Rs 50,000 coverage especially for the ST students in the district, he added.
 
The municipal council will supply free drinking water to ST families in the district, soon after the commissioning of the second phase of Swarna river project, he emphasized.
 
City municipal president Dinakar Shetty presided over the programme.  Vice-president Indira Shekar was also present on the occasion.
 
Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak welcomed the gathering.

    Distrubution of scholarship/financial assistance to ST/SC is the best of encouraging Backword classes not the reservation.
