Chikmagalur, Jul 24: The thieves sneaked into the historically famous Lord Kalaseshwara temple in Kalasa in the district on the night of Wednesday July 22 and took away the ancient idol of the Lord used for processions. The value of the idol is quite high because of its antique value, as it was 1,465-year old, gifted by the kings of Keladi. The total value of goods stolen including gold ornaments is estimated at ten lac rupees. This does not include the ancient silver mask of Lord's idol, ancient 'Utsava Murty' with pedestal and silver stick that are ancient and hence priceless.

It may be recalled, that the 'Brahmakalashotsav' of the temple had been celebrated for 10 days about two months ago, by spending around Rs 1.5 crore.

The thieves entered inside the temple by removing the bolts of all the three doors by using iron bars. Some of the gold and silver ornaments studded with precious stones, had been presented by devotees three months ago.  The watchman reportedly was sleeping in the outer precincts when the incident occurred and it was also evident that the thieves had unsuccessfully tried to gouge out the 'Kalasha' of the temple fitted at its tower.

The incident came to light when the priest arrived on Thursday morning to perform morning puja. The thieves also broke open the doors of a nearby house, rented by the local post master, who was away at the time. It is believed, that the thieves packed the stolen items at this house. Reportedly, nothing went missing from this house.

Additional superintendent of police Mutturaya, Moodigere tahsildar H N Shive Gowda, executive officer K Ramu etc., visited the spot. Sniffer dogs and finger print experts also visited the temple. Purification procedures were conducted by the priests on Thursday. Kalasha policemen have registered a case.
