Udupi, Nov 26: The inauguration of the sixth stage of Mysuru division’s, community workers empowerment training camp was held by Preethi Gehlott, IAS, CEO, district Panchayat Udupi at Samagra Grameena Ashram, Pernal, Shirva on November 26. The training was given on the topic 'Government schemes and community development' by trainer, Chand Peer from Indian Social Institute, Bengaluru.

Addressing the people of Koraga Samaj, Preethi Gehlott, CEO of Udupi district panchayat said that the government and the district administration is always willing to help people, but the problem they are facing is that the people are not approaching them. She said that in the ITDP department review meeting, they received information on the Koraga community. "In the district, 90% of the communities are well today in meeting their day to day needs and leading life, but Koraga samaj is facing problems. Koraga Samaj has stayed backward in society and the government and the district administration will encourage and support them so that even they come to the mainstream of society and enjoy all the privileges which is being provided to others by the government.

"The government had introduced schemes for the welfare of the communities, but those schemes have not reached the people and hardly made use of it. There are around 20,000 people in Koraga Samuday in Udupi district but only a small number of people have attended today's programme, which clearly shows the lack of awareness. Many communities come under ST but the stronger communities in ST claim the benefits and the weaker communities stay back. It was also reported that when the staff approached the Koraga people, they hardly got any response nor were any problems mentioned in the written format. The government as well as the district administration is always there to help and bring the community to the mainstream of society."

Preeti Gehlott had an interactive session with the people of Koraga community so that she could personally speak to them and listen to their problems to try to bring about a few changes for the betterment of the life of Koraga community.

Shakuntala Nejar, president of Samagra grameena ashram, Pernal Shirva, Chand Peer, trainer from Indian Social Institute, Bengaluru were present in the programme.
