Five rescued from burning south Mumbai building


Mumbai, Feb 5 (IANS): At least five people were rescued from a fire that broke out in a 14-storied building in the posh Malabar Hill area of south Mumbai on Wednesday, the BMC Disaster Control said.

The blaze was reported around 8 p.m. on the fifth floor of the Las Palmas building near Hanging Gardens, in what is the VVIP zone of the city housing the Raj Bhavan, ministerial and other residences.

Eight fire tenders along with seven jumbo tankers and other specialised equipment have been deployed to fight the blaze.

Local eyewitnesses said that huge tongues of flames were seen leaping out towards the upper floors of the building and the building residents were being evacuated as a precautionary measure.

So far, no casualties have been reported and further details are awaited.
