Kalyan, Feb 6: Earlier on Tuesday and Wednesday, passers-by observed the roads in Dombivli MIDC Phase 1 turn pink. It is believed that the cause for the pink coloured roads is the chemical powders released by the Industries in the MIDC area.
The fuming locals informed the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and others concerned with pollution control.
The matter reached the state government and chief minister Uddhav Thackeray sought a report from the MPCB on Wednesday. The locals have been complaining about the foul smell and gases that they say are choking them.
Allegedly the gases emitted by agrochemical, pesticide and other chemical industries for several years now has caused an impact on the locals. Earlier, in 2013, a green rain in the area in 2013, raising questions over pollution. "These problems have raised a question mark on the effectiveness of the pollution control policies and activities of the state government's various agencies concerned," an activist, Raju Nalavade, said.
After locals complained to the authorities, a team of MPCB officials visited the spot on Wednesday and collected samples from the roads that had changed colour. The MPCB officers and MIDC staff also used water tankers to clean the roads, but the pink colour would not go away easily.
