Media Release

Kalaburgi, Feb 10: The celebration of the 150th year of the establishment of the Apostolic Carmel of India, Mangaluru was held in the Mother of Divine Grace Cathedral hall, here on Sunday, February 9, 2020. The ceremony began with the eucharistic celebration offered by the Bishop of Kalburgi Dr Robert Michael Miranda with four other concelebrants. The sisters from Carmel Niketan and Maria Nilaya made the eucharistic celebration very meaningful by an inspiring introduction, offertory procession and appropriate hymns. Before the Mass the frame of Mother Veronica was unveiled.

Bishop preached a touching homily. He connected today’s readings to the life and mission of Mother Veronica the foundress of the Apostolic Carmel. How she became a light to humanity by dying to herself and how she became the salt by giving taste to so many lives by taking a different route which others had not trod.

To mark this important event after the Mass the sisters of the Apostolic Carmel organized a programme in the Cathedral Hall. It was the inspiration of Sr Christine Misquith who worked behind the screen to make it happen. The students of St Ann’s Pre Primary Teachers Training Institute, Mangaluru put up a lively life sketch of Mother Veronica for an hour. The bishop, priests, sisters from the different congregation and the people of the Cathedral Parish witnessed the programme.

The Bishop presided over the function and appreciated the students and encouraged them. He also spoke about how we needed to be like Mother Veronica in our modern society by inculcating Christ’s values in our day to day lives. How we need to continue Christ’s mission by encouraging vocations in our families.

He commended the hard work done by the sisters of the Apostolic Carmel in Bidar from the pioneering years. Sr Bhakthi Mary compered the programme. Sr Supreetha proposed the vote of thanks. The dance drama will be shown in two more schools of Kalaburgi on February 10 and 11 at two more centres in Bidar. About 3,000 students will be viewing this programme thus Mother Veronica will be made known in two districts of Kalaburgi and Bidar.
