Karkala, Feb 11: A house located near Nirmala Saw Mill at Gandhi Maidan within the municipal limits here caught fire and burnt down. Loss in this tragedy has been estimated at two lac rupees. Cause of fire could not be ascertained.

The house is occupied by Sulochana Rao and Prakash Rao on one side and Giraja on the other. After around 7 pm on Monday February 10, fire was sighted in the first floor of the house. The locals called the fire brigade immediately after which the firemen rushed to the spot and helped in extinguishing fire.

The neighbours brought out the cattle that were inside the cattle shed adjoining the house immediately after seeing the fire and hence the livestock was saved from imminent danger. As the firemen also brought the gas cylinder out before fire could reach there, the risk was brought down.

The house, which is about 100 years old, had thatched roof. Recently the upper floor was added and rubber sheets were provided. The rubber sheets worked as catalysts for spreading fire and daily use items turned into ashes soon.

Fire station in-charge B M Sanjeev, Amruth Karkerala, Jay Amoolya, Suresh Kumar and others participated in the dousing operation.
