Mangalore: Gold Confiscated from Dubai Passenger - Pictures

Mangalore, Dec 18: The officials of the directorate of revenue intelligence have recovered a kilogram of gold from a person, who arrived in the city in a flight from Dubai on Thursday December 17 evening.

 

Mohammed Imran Ruknuddin from Bhatkal, who came in an Air India Express flight, was found to be carrying gold ornaments/jewellery weighing a kilogram, concealed in his socks. He was checked by the officials, after he opted to come out through the green channel after immigration and customs clearance. The officials have confirmed that he was carrying about 1003.4 grams of gold valued at about Rs 13 lac. 

R Venkataraman, additional director general of revenue intelligence said in a press note, that this is the first seizure of gold jewellery/ornaments smuggled through this airport.

    Up to 1000 Gm of gold/gold ornaments can be imported by NRIs by paying Rs 220 per 10 Gm as per the customs rule.If this is correct he should have paid Rs 22000/- and got it d and cleared.(Pl correct me if wrong or if there are any further ammenments to this rule)

    If the gold purchased by Mohammed is through his legitimate earnings, then the revenue should show some leniency by settling through fine for not declaring. If Mohammed not the real owner of gold, he got to face the law.

    Indian government bought tonnes of gold from the International Monetary Fund. Then why is it Mr. Ruknudin is guilty of bribg gold into India? Are we still backward in Customs Officer's mercy?
