Waive GST on medical items used in Covid-19 fight: Rahul

New Delhi, Apr 20 (IANS): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, here on Monday, demanded that no goods and services tax (GST) be charged on medical equipment used in combating the coronavirus pandemic.

"In this difficult times we are demanding that equipments and other necessary items essential for combating Covid-19 should be made GST free. It's wrong that the public which is already reeling under disease and poverty is being charged GST on soap, sanitiser, mask and gloves," Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

Hand sanitisers invite 18 per cent GST, face mask 5 per cent and paracetamol tablets, PPE kits, ventilators 12 per cent. The tax was making these products more expensive for hospitals and people, increasing the burden on the masses struggling to make ends meet, said the Congress.

Therefore, the government must waive GST on these products and make them more affordable for the people, said the Congress.

It is unfortunate the central govt imposing GST on Medical items for COVID-19. Medical items are a must if one wants to survive. Not a luxury or for pleasure.A basic necessity for survival.Govt should
also provide free testing for corona like many democratic countries in the world. How can daily wage workers pay the cost of testing amounting thousands of rupees. Sad to see the sufferings.

Does Pappu understand the implication of his proposal as far as GST is concerned? His suggestion will actually increase the cost of items!! GST can be refunded as done by govt. But cannot be made zero.
The easiest thing in the world is telling others what to do when not in power. When fiscal discipline is breached then ex finance minister along with ex RBI governor will find faults and give loads of advise. Unfortunately we know all politicians irrespective of the party they represent they are good at free advice when not in power.

RaGa did not mention to be implemented at all times but now where people are beaten and battered without income. No country in the world imposes tax on medical items especially on poor people. Medical items being no revenue generating goods for the govt. so is increase fuel prices and crowd funding from people during these testing times.

This was already coming and no rocket science .These waivers were in discussion , in news and expected when COVID19 cases were spiking up in India. Similar to the previous case ,. Now he will tomorrow say 'Thank you Govt for following my advise' and it will be a field day for the Ghulams to cheer up and shout 'Wah Wah Next PM! Next PM!.

    Raviraj Poonja,

Why Modi govt spokesperson did not respond to the Tweet that there is no GST on Covid-19 medicines (or that it is in discussion to waive it off) ? Mine (and obviously yours) misunderstanding could have been cleared off - couldn't it ? Waif-off when ? After all tests/recoveries are over and people paid for it ?

Also in previous matter. When China gnarled back about restrictions on FDI, why Xi's Sabarmati-swing-partner did not mew back ?

GST is a pittance in the matter .
The Hon SC also fumbled saying Tests free for all and then changed it to only for the poor.
The magnitude is such that you work hand in glove with the Govt.rather than picking petty flaws.
Look at the Way financial aid has been given in all sectors.Think the Govt.will lag behind this if considered feasible ?
What's there to make a show by giving such suggestion s ?
Why was it not there at the Press Conference ? As usual somebody else's brain child....

Financial aid ? Where did it come from ? 'PM Cares Fund' collected especially for Covid-19 combat ?

Hello... the aid is not actually aid, it's the tax funds that the states rightfully deserve for carrying out general works, not to fight the pandemic. Why are you (and the central govt) confusing it with aid to fight Covid-19 ?

If you find this pittance, perhaps you guys who agree with it's imposition, should sponsor it. What do you say ?

Left overs of a coached interview ...
That which he failed to mention in his ' Strategy ' and instead talked about managing the Virus and saying Lock Down was not a solution.
When Coffers have been opened up to battle the Covid, drastic steps taken to counter on a war footing this leader gives arm chair suggestions.
Shameful to say the least ...
Take to the streets ,find out what best you can do in your party ruled dates including Maharashtra...
Try saving lives first...GST can come later..

What could be expected of a govt where it is turning back to citizens during tough times???. What happened to all those tough talks and chest thumping swearings????. Test of mettle is revealed during tough times not during happy times.

He is saying what had already been discussed and in the Pipeline. These waivers were expected. Its just common sense. ONly he and few of his chelas would find it exiting . If he was that smart he would not have been booted out of Amethi and fled to Kerala Wayanad to win only on ''you know whose' votes.

Modi is from Gujarat. To make his presence stronger in the north in addition to the Guj constituency, he contested in Varanasi as well in 2014 ,. He WON both constituencies. It was a repeat in 2019 . Unlike your Yuvraj, he was not booted out his 80 year old family bastion Amethi for non-performance and then just for survival sake flee to Wayanad in Kerala. One look at who is more populated in Wayanad answers your question on how RaGa won there?.
