Bantwal, Dec 24: Puttur subdivision assistant superintendent of police (ASP), Dr Chandragupta, said that efforts are being made to turn the police stations people-friendly, by educating the concerned to get rid of haughty behaviour and arrogance, while dealing with the people.

Speaking at the ‘Interaction with ASP’ programme organized on Wednesday December 23 at the Press Club, B C Road, by the Taluk Working Journalists Union, he noted that the people, since olden days, are found to be apprehensive about approaching the policemen and police stations. When questioned about the fact that arrogant behaviour on the part of some police officers have been keeping the people at bay, he said that the department has now been giving lot of importance to close the gap between the general public and the police stations. “We are concentrating on bringing changes in the behaviour of the police personnel. With the purpose of enabling the policemen to mingle with the people freely, several programmes are being held at various places,” he clarified.

About the sporadic communal clashes that have been erupting at various places in the taluk, he opined that the police department alone can not control this situation, and this can be achieved, only if the people extend wholehearted cooperation and support the efforts being made by the policemen. “Those who blame the policemen for everything have forgotten about their own responsibilities.  It would be improper to expect the policemen to do everything. The people should help them out by passing on whatsoever they have about the miscreants,” he felt. He also said, that the higher officials have been apprised of the fact that in spite of the fact that 11 roads lead to Kerala from Karnataka in this region, a check post exists only at Saradka, which makes it highly difficult to regulate illegal activities.

Dr Chandragupta revealed that a proposal to upgrade Nelyady, Punjalakatte, Dharmasthala and Farangipet police outposts into full-fledged police stations, is pending before the government.  The government will give its nod, after considering the population these outposts serve, number of crimes, infrastructure availability etc., he explained.

Local circle inspector, Nanjundegowda and town police station in-charge, M R Tahsildar, were present. Union president, Venkatesh Bantwal, welcomed. Vice-president, Sooryanarayana delivered introductory address. Secretary, Sandeep, proposed vote of thanks.
