Mangalore: Two-day Film Appreciation Workshop Inaugurated at Sahodaya

Mangalore Dec 27: The two-day film appreciation workshop organized by Sahamatha Film Society was inaugurated here at Sahodaya, with future perspectives of reaching public with intention of educating, creating awareness against the trends of disturbing communal harmony and intolerance prevailing in society for several reasons.
 
Director of Sahodaya, Dr Rathnakar Sadananda inaugurated the workshop and said that it is a universal truth that the human beings live within a set boundary and has narrow thinking. The basic need of the human being is to live beyond the boundaries and have a broader vision and perspective of an issue, he said. Getting knowledge through involvement and participation is good, he observed.
 
Prof Chandra Poojary said that the people are recognized through religion, caste or creed in the district and there is little or no space for humanity. Creating oneness among human beings is the issue that has been provided prime focus by the Sahamatha. The visual media is one of the strong medium that educates citizens on good values through effective visuals. The film appreciation will help fulfill the objective of creating awareness in society, he added.
 
President of Sahamatha Film Society, Prof H M Somasheskarappa said that the Sahamatha was formed due to coming together of like-minded people. It has thus opted to organize the first film screening workshop to mould future resource persons, who will involve themselves in visual campaign; he said. The aim is to educate people against the disturbances in the society as well as the problems a common man comes across, he added.
 
“The workshop will focus on learning the technical aspects of the film and also will be a stage to express the opinion as well as discuss the theme of the film including its presentation,” he said.

Film maker Parameshwara Guruswamy, resource person said that the cinema as a visual media has a strongest impact on the society as the illiterate too can be made to understand through visuals and its theme. The viewing of film along with understanding technical and theoretical details will help analyze a film in a better way, he said. 
 
The films of Lumiere brothers, Child Walking, Train Arriving at Station, Chess Fever, Chariot race scene from `Ben Hur’, Akira Kurosava’s Crows, Tunnel, The Throne of Blood, Victoria D Cica’s `The Bicycle Thief, Satyajith Ray’s Pather Panchali, Girish Kasaravalli’s Tabarana Kathe, Ritwik K Ghatak’s Megha Dhaka Thara,  Roman Polansky’s Tragedy of Macbeth,  Ingmar Burgman’s  `Seventh Seal’ Gurudutt’s Pyasa, Pattabhirama Reddy’s Samskara will be viewed during the workshop.
 
The workshop will focus also on understanding the film medium, invention, development of film as a narrative medium and how to read a film and understanding Indian cinema as a whole apart from discussions on the issues.
 
Prof Chandra Poojary of Hampi University welcomed all with the brief introduction about Sahamatha. Ivan D’Silva, secretary of Sahamatha, members Dr B Nityananda Shetty, Dr Vasudev Belle, Jagdeesh Ammunje, Dr Udayakumar Irvatthur and Prof Alwin D’Sa among others were present.
