Mangalore: Unauthorized Sheds of Labourers at Kulai Removed

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Dec 30: Based on complaints made by the people of the area and also the local corporator and former mayor, Ganesh Hosabettu, about the area turning unhygienic and ugly, the officials of the City Corporation on Tuesday December 29 evicted the unauthorized sheds put up by labourers in a private land behind Mahabala Hospital in Kulai.

These sheds had been set up to accommodate the labourers, who have come here to work for the special economic zone. As no basic amenities were provided, the labourers used to throw waste around the place, besides relieving themselves in the open place by the side of their sheds. The harassed residents of the area had complained to the Corporation, expressing apprehension about the likely spread of infectious diseases. As nothing was done to clear the mess even after several complaints, corporator Ganesh Hosabettu had also threatened to resign, sources said.

Hosabettu, who was at the spot when the operation was conducted, said that the officials of the Corporation employed delaying tactics in removing the sheds, even though several complaints were made to them about the unauthorized habitats making the area look slum-like. He said that the officials finally acted, after the Corporation commissioner issued a warning to them.
