The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development has launched six projects in the State under the Tribal Development Fund (TDF) for economic well-being of tribals residing in remote areas.

Speaking to The Hindu on Monday, NABARD Regional Office Chief General Manager Venkatesh Tagat said the NABARD has launched its a tree-based farming programme in six places - H.D. Kote in Mysore district, Pavagada in Tumkur district, Bagepalli in Chikballapur district, Challakere in Chitradurga district, Gundlupet in Chamarajanagar district and Raichur.

The duration of each project is about six years and each family would be granted Rs. 30,000 for taking up income-generating activity. "The main objective of the programme is to attain development of the poor tribal families through a combination of interventions." The bank would provide financial aid to 1,000 tribal families in each of the six places for six years.

Under the tribal development programme, bank has so far released about Rs four crore in the State. A major work that has been taken up is in the Pavagada, where tribal families have been assisted to plant 30,000 mango saplings on 850 acres, Mr Tagat said.

The projects under TDF would be implemented through community-based organisations that have managerial and financial capabilities and that are working in the project area. The tribals are encouraged to take up plantation of cashew, sapota, and other multi-purpose fast growing forestry species in their areas. Income generation activities for landless and women and health interventions would also be taken up under the programme, he said.

In the country as a whole, the NABARD has increased its TDF to Rs 600 crore. It had started the TDF with a corpus of Rs 50 crore in 2004 to uplift the tribal population.

Mr Tagad said an integrated tribal development project through the garden approach was launched in Gujarat with a sponsorship from KfW of Germany and later extended to Maharashtra. Wadi is a combination of fruit crops suitable to the area, with forestry species on the periphery of the land holdings. (EOM)

Cordial relationship between police and public is the need of the hour, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said here today.

Pointing to increasing number of grievances from public that their complaints were not being registered in police stations, he called for special attention and focus by the police to develop a cordial relationship with the public, inaugurating a three-day annual conference of senior police officers.

**It is necessary for police personnel to remember that without the cooperation of the general public, it is impossible for them to discharge their functions easily and effectively’’, he said. The police officers must spend more time in their offices to monitor the functioning of their respective areas.

Law and order, Yeddyurappa said, is a litmus test for any government and there is a need for better coordination between IAS and IPS officers in districts to ensure peace.

In an oblique reference to night life in Bangalore city, he said **all untoward activities that happen after dusk must be dealt with an iron hand. It must be ensured that each and every citizen can move about freely even at midnight’’, he said.
