Puttur, Jul 8: After the compound wall of the neighbouring house collapsed all of a sudden on a woman who was rolling bidis, she lost her life. The incident happened at Parladka Golikatte in the city on Tuesday, July  7.

The deceased was Vasanthi alias Shobha (49). She was seated at a spot behind her home where she was rolling bidis, but a compound wall caved in on her unexpectedly. The compound wall which fell pertained to the house of Farooq, a fruit seller. It is suspected that the wall would have collapsed due to the fact that mud underneath the wall had turned soft due to incessant rain received in the region since the last two days.

The woman was sitting with her back to the compound wall when stones and mud fell on her, burying her in the bargain. She lost her life instantly. Her husband and son were at home when this tragedy occurred.

Locals joined firemen in extricating the body of the lady from under the debris. As a measure of abundant precaution, family members of Farooq have been shifted to safer places. Neighbouring residents have been advised to exercise caution.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA Sanjeeva Matandoor, MLC Pratap Simha Nayak, municipal councillor Deeksha Pai, taluk panchayat standing committee chairman Saja Radhakrishna Alva, deputy superintendent of police Dinakar Shetty, Sampa police circle inspector Thimmappa Naik visited the spot.

District in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary visited the house of the bereaved family and the government hospital where the body was kept in the mortuary. He consoled the grieving family members and announced a compensation of Rs 5 lac from the Natural Disaster Relief Fund.

People recall that in a similar incident of compound wall collapse, two lives were lost on July 6, 2018, at Salmara Hebbarabail adjacent to the railway station here.

Shobha, the wife of transport controller at Mangaluru KSRTC divisional unit Chandrashekhar, has left behind her husband, two sons, and a daughter.
