Mangaluru: New Mangalore Port Trust trade union honours COVID-19 warriors on Independence Day

Mangaluru, Aug 15: Independence Day was celebrated in a meaningful and spectacular manner this year by the Trade Union 'Canara Port Workers Union INTUC' functioning at New Mangalore Port Trust.

Soon after hoisting the National Flag at their office premises the union leaders visited the Port Trust Hospital at Panambur and honoured the corona warriors working there. They offered flower bouquets, sweets and mementos to the doctors, nurses and other paramedical staff of the hospital.

Aboobakar, trustee New Mangalore Port Trust and general secretary of the union lauded the great service rendered by the frontline COVID-19 responders who worked day and night risking their lives while battling this deadly disease. He said they left no stone unturned to keep the employees and their families safe. The trustee admired the doctors, nurses and sanitation workers who worked selflessly 24X7 exposing themselves to the virus. He said every one should recognize the dedicated and exemplary service and commend their efforts.



Close on the heels of directives issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India he said it was decided to arrange the function on Independence Day. On this occasion, Aboobakar and the other office-bearers of the union expressed their gratitude to the chairman of the New Mangalore Port Trust, Venkata Ramana Akkaraju and K G Nath deputy chairman for their wonderful handling of the pandemic at New Mangalore Port Trust and its township with the help of the chief medical officer, senior medical officers at NMPT and designated doctors from the district administration. They also thanked the chairman for arranging COVID-19 rapid antigen testing for all the direct and indirect employees of NMPT and their family on 12th, 13th and the 14th of this month at their respective places.

By arranging this test for all, they said the Port Trust and district administration could identify the positive cases and provide timely treatment and arrange quarantine at the newly arranged quarantine facility at the Port Trust followed by contact tracing which indeed helped in a big way in containing the pandemic. The union leaders said COVID-19 test for all workers initiated by the NMPT chairman is excellent work and he set an example for other organizations to follow at a time when the state's COVID-19 tally breached the 2 lac-mark and the new infections are increasing drastically. Senior medical officer, Dr Bharath received compliments on behalf of all the staff and thanked the union. K Farook working president, M Shivanna federation leader, Harish Kumar vice-president, Sukumar Naik, Hameed and Sampath from the union were present.
