Mandya, Aug 19: In connection with the land dispute, a fight erupted between members of a joint family. The fight ended with five women trying to end their lives. The incident happened at Kokkare Bellur in Maddur taluk in the district.

Shylaja (35), wife of Narayan from Kokkare Bellur lost her life in this incident. The condition of her relative, Thimmamma (45), wife of Nathappa, is critical.

Narayan and Srinivas from the village are cousins. The two families had differences over the ownership rights of the property. Two weeks back, village elders had joined together to sort out the dispute in the village level tribunal but the two did not agree to abide by the decision of the tribunal. On Tuesday morning, a fight erupted again, after which Shylaja and Thimmamma consumed insecticide. Both were rushed to the government hospital at Maddur but Shylaja breathed her last. Jayamma (62), Siddesh (41) and Shivalingamma (65) from the rival side consumed kerosene in a fit of frustration and fell ill. They are being treated at the government hospital at Maddur.
