Mangaluru: Covid-related curbs on liquor hit bar owners hard

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 26: Bar owners in the district have been battered by the restrictions placed on the marketing of liquor because of coronavirus. The business is down in the dumps as the liquor retailers are permitted to limit their business to take away parcels.

The district has 412 liquor shops including 212 bars. They remained closed from March 24 onward as per the government orders. Beginning from the first week of May this year, they have been allowed to introduce parcel service but the amount of business has dropped substantially. Most of the bar owners are in a dilemma as they can neither shut down their bars nor can properly conduct business.

The bar owners rue the fact that the government has not yet permitted the people to consume liquor inside bars. They say that only 20 to 25 per cent business as compared to the previous period, is now being recorded. "The amount of eatables prepared and their sale have steeply declined. It has become very difficult to manage liquor stock and pay salaries to workers," they lament. They feel that they can survive and retain workers only if they are provided with some financial impetus besides permission to carry on their trade freely.

Smaller bars employ between 10 to 50 staff while star hotels provide employment to over 300 through direct and indirect employment. Most of the people employed in the bars are from other states, many of whom have not returned after they left in an exodus after lockdown. Those who stayed back are not getting proper work. M Ganesh Shetty, president of Dakshina Kannada Liquor Traders Association, noted that the owners of businesses have lost the financial strength to continue with the trade, having utilised all sale proceeds to pay salaries and meet other costs. In addition, he cites a shortage of labour as another problem. He wants the government to reduce taxes and extend financial help to bars so that their owners and workers can save themselves from doom. He also says that renewal of licences costs Rs 6.9 lac and many of the bar owners have not renewed their licences on account of financial crunch.

Covid-related Curbs have almost killed every single Business. It is not one single Liquor business, which has at least opened it's doors and is conducting some business.
I am in Tourism Industry, look at our fate, Hotels have just being opened, but not many want to go. Flights are almost still grounded, with only few operating. Almost all Visa Consulates and Embassies are still closed for business. Cruise Liners are on stand still. So entire business has collapsed.
Liquor people who want to drink will still buy even if taxes are increased. They might reduce quantity or might prefer cheaper brands over expensive ones, but who can not do without it, will still continue to drink.
Unlike Travel & Tourism Industry. We are almost crushed under Covid -19. But there is not much of a discussion about our Industry at all. !

Don't worry. Everything will fall in place. It is just a matter of time. People are eager to go out on tours, just waiting for the first opportunity.
Till then, give business to liquor shops and relax.

Any unwanted situation like, Natural disasters, pandemics etc, tourism industry is the one which hit first and last to revoke. The people in this industry lost the job on first day of lockdown and still waiting for opening the doors and get back to work. Still no Government responding or thinking to give relief to this industry really very sad

Fall of liquor industry is multifactorial! Fi rst signs were evident with a 25% cut right after gst & demo due to obvious reasons! The final mail on the coffin was hit after ban on booze and prolonged.loss of excise; the sudden increase of 18-27% after a 7% rise proved to be the nemesis! Already in an economy seeing under depression with heavy job
Losses, payvuts, closure of MSMEs, migrants crisis most of the liquor industry will not survive for long?
In Mumbai many high end restaurants generating revenue of 2crore/month have been closed down due to inability to pay high rentals, salaries etc.! Many wine shops are out for sale as it's no more a viable business at 30% cash sales!
IMHO only those with black money, political clout may survive; but with the dwindling discretionary money with the common public only a handful may survive backed by black money!
In short, aviation hospitality, restaurant businesses are in for a toss!
The crises will deepen further as the 4 months moratorium ends!
What can you expect from a state which is reeling under deep debts?? Sun is setting down on some shops/bars!!

Now local hooch breweries will spring up everywhere!

The state should further increase taxes on wine shops n bars... Drunkenness, crimes, will definitely decrease, there will be peace n tranquillity in families... further taxes should be drastically increased, on all alcoholic beverages, to discourage young and the old from getting fatally addicted !!!

Now curbs hit Bar owners hard. No problem. Generally they hit society hard. Bars are a curse for the peace and cause for most crimes.

Liquor business is down not because of Covid related curbs. It is mainly because of greed from the government by increasing tax so high on liquor which no other country does. Let them increase another 10 per cent, so many will learn to live without liquor or minimize the consumption. I used to drink almost everyday, now hardly once or twice that too cheapest brands. So more and more wine shops shold be closed and those who are invoked in this trade invest in some other business and the staff also should join some better decent jobs than this liquor selling job. Anyway situation made me to become a new person, and learned to live without or little quantity of liquor.

FYI, whenever there's a ban on IMFL country brew (hooch) will flourish!
What's the loss for the govt will be direct gain for illegal hooch breweries & corrupt officials!
Remember the olden days of prohibition, almost all houses in rural areas used to brew their own stuff!!

Are they paid thier salaries during lockdown to thier long standing staff. Many are not paid for entire duration and others are just asked to go.
These labourers are the first priority before considering tax reductions for the bar owners.
Many owners are having deep pockets and collectively they can support small businesses owners and thier staff before asking public money from govt.

Though liquor is sinful, let us not bother
You take this bottle, I will take the other.
State government is bankrupt in finance
Let us help its treasure chest to enhance

There are other industries as well that have been hit hard. I am from the conference industry and all physical events are on hold. We are currently hosting virtual events that sell for the price if peanuts. Salaries are hard to come by. It is a fine balancing act between paying salaries and keeping ourselves at work. The govts 3 month moratorium is nothing. Because people are suffering long term repurcussions. It is all a bkeak future. Schools and colleges are demanding for fee to be paid immediately and we dont have an idea where to get it from. So it is not just the bar owners, but the staff working there and in industries like ours who we all should be worried about

    Bro,
At the end of the.moratorium, it will be a big burden for anyone to shell out backlog EMIs along with accrued interest! The real financial crisis will open out when financial cos start hounding the debtors with notices & recovery agents!
