Kundapur, Sep 7: "As of now, Karnataka stands at the fourth spot in the country as far as sea fishing is concerned. In inland fishing, we are at the ninth spot. Our aim is to reach the top spot in three years," said minister for fisheries, ports and inland water transport, Kota Srinivas Poojary.

He was speaking after visiting Gangolli fishing jetty, Maravante breakwater, and Koderi fishing jetty areas on Saturday.

Poojary said that a new jetty is being built at Gangolli by spending Rs 12 crore, which will help the fishermen from the area. He said that the ministry has approved works worth Rs 85 crore for the second phase of Maravanthe breakwater works. "We will prepare project report, complete tender process, and take up work within three months. We will also extend the Koderi fisheries jetty, Uppunda country boat anchoring minor jetty at Uppunda, besides providing basic amenities, electricity lighting connecting road constructions work etc," he explained. He also thanked chief minister B S Yediyurappa, for sanctioning these projects.

Dakshina Kannada and Udulpi Fisheries Marketing Federation president Yashlpal Suvarna, zilla panchayat members Babu Hege and Shobha Putran, Byndoor taluk panchayat president Mahendra Poojary, and senior officials of fisheries and ports department were present.

Minister Poojary also said that all over the state, training programme is being imparted to interested people in cage fishing through agricultural workshops with the aim of providing self-employment to 10,000 unemployed youngsters towards fulfilling the Prime Minister's dream of achieving self-reliant India.
