Udupi: Woman waiting to cross road crushed by speeding car

Udupi, Sep 17: A lady, identified as Sumathi Bhat (57), was killed in a hit and run case which happened near Kolalagiri bus stand at 7.30 am on Wednesday September 16.

Sumathi was waiting beside the national highway to cross the road at Kolalagiri Road when a grey Maruti WagonR car which came from the direction of Brahmavar hit her and sped away toward Udupi. Sumathi, who got tossed onto the road, suffered deep injuries to her right temple and her right leg was fractured. She also suffered nicks and cuts all over her body and lay in an unconscious state.

Mailton Louis (55) from Uppoor village standing at the autorickshaw stand near the K R Road junction, who witnessed the accident, immediately took the lady to the government hospital at Ajjarkad Udupi where she was admitted. Sumathi did not respond to treatment and breathed her last at about 10 am the same day.

Based on a complaint filed by Milton Louis, the Brahmavar police have registered a case under sections 279 and 304(A) of the Indian Penal Code and 134 (A&B) of Indian Motor vehicles Act. The probe is in progress.
