Puttur, Apr 9: Prof M Sooryanarayan Appa (75), who had functioned as the principal of Vivekananda College here for two decades, and had got credit for being a very efficient administrator, passed away at Bangalore on Thursday April 8. He was a distinguished organizer in Scouts and Guides movement, and had been decorated with the Silver Elephant award from the President of India for his excellent services.

Prof Appa, during whose period Vivekananda College saw all-round development, is survived by three daughters and a son. During his period, Vivekananda College rose to be recognized as a pioneer in the fields of education, cultural activities and sports. Due to the encouragement given by him, several budding talents realized their hidden potential and excelled in their lives. He had written a Kannada book, ‘Vritti Sihi Eradu Dashaka’, where he had recorded anecdotes and glimpses from his two decades of service at the said college.

Prof Appa was one of the few people who worked tirelessly for setting up Mangalore Stock Exchange. His simple but straight-forwardness, clear thoughts, openness, discipline and mastery over languages had enabled him to leave a unique imprint of his own in academic and other fields. He was leading a retired life at Bangalore since the last several years.
